Precisely this. The NRL needs to "pick winners" ie determine what the next strategic location(s) are, THEN figure out the best model to make them happen in a successful way.It seems other sports pick an area they want to expand into, put money into the sport there and work with local clubs/investors to start up the club.
We would be better off following this path.
As if Perth's 10-20k viewers are that valuable, it's the 9th game that's the value propositionAs expected given Vlandys said this three weeks ago. Question still remains will they get a Perth club in for tv by 2028 or just go with png and hope the nine games is enough to interest tv.
always had my doubts, lets not forget this was never an nrl strategy, it was a politis good idea in a chairs meeting,
So rugba league wasting everyone’s time and money again and ending up looking incompetent.
I don't think there was a quote from anyone at the NRL about the private ownership, just the opinion of the article writerIf the NRL does end up running its own team, will the clubs still demand a licence fee? Or will they be promised a share of profits if the club ever gets sold?
So far we have:
- no bids that meet whatever criteria the ARLC has set for admission
- the ARLC coming out and saying we basically don't want private ownership so most bids have wasted their time and money
- Brisbane bids also wasted their time and money
- PNG is the only 'bid' that makes the cut after the ARLC negotiated a licence fee with the Australian Government using taxpayers money. No govt money, no PNG team. Looks like its built on solid foundations from day 1.
Sounds like a successful expansion bid process so far and should be used as a study case by Harvard and other leading business schools around the world.
Yes people are confusing actual quotes from Abdo and Vlandy's for bullshit made up by journos in articlesOr the game is finally valuing itself correctly and this action can been seen as a positive.
We don’t need to react as if the sky is falling every time some news break that wasn’t predicted.
Abdo is quoted again as saying it won’t stop the game having expansion as a priority and moving towards 20 teams.
Is this reported anywhere? Tried the Facebook groups but all I see are hysterical rants from Perth Red there.Sounds like the Perth bid is close to being over the line
Looks like you’re hopes for a job off Cummins might eventuate
Red and black bear has good solid info on the bidIs this reported anywhere? Tried the Facebook groups but all I see are hysterical rants from Perth Red there.
Whilst I don't think the NRL has handled the process as well as you'd hope, at least David Moffett isn't getting his tentacles in the sport anytime soon. Anyone who championed the South Island Kea bid really need to read up on their RL history and give their heads a wobble, that man is toxic.
Seems like this what soon to be happening with Perth, I would probably suggest it's more likely going to happen with a south Island bid also down the trackIt seems other sports pick an area they want to expand into, put money into the sport there and work with local clubs/investors to start up the club.
We would be better off following this path.
It's a 9th game regardless which team/bid gets pickedAs if Perth's 10-20k viewers are that valuable, it's the 9th game that's the value proposition
Hopefully, there needs to be strategy and investment from head office for these 2 areas.Seems like this what soon to be happening with Perth, I would probably suggest it's more likely going to happen with a south Island bid also down the track
There's 3 bids in Christchurch, surely an alliance is on the cards. PVD is there today! He'll see a sold out test, the construction of a new stadium and a vibrant city full of enthusiasm for a team of their own, new fans! New market! And talent aplenty!“We haven’t ruled out another team in Queensland but the Brisbane bids failed as well,” V’landys said.”
And
“A second New Zealand team is absolutely still an option. I am going over there on Sunday for the Test match so I will have a good look at the region.”
He said the Brisbane bids have to show how they can get new fans without hurting the broncos titans and dolphins which really rules out easts tigers

Get it done!
You base that on Perth reds rambling or what? All they are missing is someone to chuck in $20mil
Clubs dont pay flight costs. Thanks for your insights, didn’t realise you had set up an nrl club and knew the costs, you should have offered to write their budget plan lol.
wa govt is building the club a centre of excellence and $10mill of that $30mill was earmarked to be spend on the firs 3-4 years facility development at Ken Allen field until the CofE is ready.
bears run women’s teams, hm ball, sg ball and nsw cup on a budget of $1.9mill a year. I think with $30mill they’d be ok lol.
