He was never a dominant batsman. You had dickheads like Warne in commentary demanding he walk out and smack 50 off 30 because 'that's a keepers job' when he's only ever been a knock it around, rotate the strike type player. Then he was one of the scapegoats for the Hobart debacle against the Proteas.
I know we're pretty much agreeing here, but Nevill seemed to be an exceptional keeper.
As a batsmen, maybe more in the Waitling mode- but that's Test cricket right.
Waitling- 57 tests. ave. 38.11. sr. 43.00
Nevill- 17 tests. ave. 22.28. sr. 40.66
Wade- 22 tests. ave. 28.58. st. 47.91
Paine- 15 tests. ave. 38.25. sr. 45.02
Actually, looking at that, maybe Paine is more like Waitling than I thought.
In any event, the trade was Nevill for Wade, right? Pretty massive concession of the wicket keeping front for minimal reward with the bat.
I guess we just put it down as a failed experiment.
