Been a good fighting effort from NZ. They've showed ticker.

They'll be hoping there is more rain around tomorrow.

Not sure about a fighting effort (Williamson aside), getting well and truly licked in this test

If not for the rain, contest would be over before lunch tomorrow, if not sooner

In terms of rain, looks like we should get a full days play in for day 5 if it goes that far, now that would be a fighting effort from the kiwis instead of relying on the rain to bail them out

They still batted the most part of a full day and only lost 3 wickets.

Guptill who is out of form still gave his all facing 133 balls and just occupying the crease.

I thought Latham played well with fight, but that Starc ball was just very very good.

Imo Williamson should have got the benefit of the doubt from the umpire. But it was one of those 50/50 calls.

If the weather is good I reckon we will get them out midway through the 2nd session.

In the extended first session I reckon we will get 3 wickets and have them 6 down at lunch.

Cloudy start to the day lads, if the rain stays away it should do a bit this morning. When is the new ball due???

It's embarrassing to be hoping for rain in the first test, but that's where New Zealand is. Just like the bad old days. There are a few players who have showed the ability to stick around late in the Test match, but I am not sure that they can in these conditions and against a bowling attack like Australia. McCullum and Waitling have done so in Wellington (v India and Sri Lanka). Williamson withstood an irresistible South African bowling attack in 2012 (Morkel, Philander, Steyn) to bat out for a draw…but again, in Wellington. We really should play all our Test matches in Wellington.

bit of rain about on the GC, will definitely be rain affected today, just hope we get enough play to do the job

Another 27 overs away, probably due 30min before lunch as first session is 2.5hrs today

Maybe Lyon can do some damage before hand, though he rarely has done so on a day 5 deck

Does Macca play his natural game? Or does he go against the grain and just look to try and just not get out by defending mostly and letting wide/short balls go that he would normally smack for 4

He has demonstrated an ability to restrain his natural aggression in the past. Thats what he needs to do

362 runs, looking at roughly 4 an over with 3 wickets down. Common sense would say that an NZ win is nigh on impossible but cricket is a funny game. If McCullum and Taylor tee off anything could happen.

Yep, was pretty obvious he was labouring - real shame, although he didn't show it, he (and Corey Anderson) are exciting talents, if they were Australian Brayshaw would be jizzing all over the booth about their levers and the size of grounds (and I'd back Anderson to hit the ball harder than Marsh any day tbh).

Might now mean Watling plays as a bat, and Ronchi keeps - perhaps not a bat option at Perth.

Don't think they'd play Santner as all-rounder, but guess they could and play 4 pace bowlers...

We've commonly had poor first tests in recent years, but the losses of Anderson, Neesham, potentially Southee, and the well underdone Boult means we're up against it.

On McCullum, guess you Aussies haven't seen him in tests, he's well and truly capable of a backs to the wall effort - we'd have most confidence in that context on him, Williamson (who is good eh?) and Watling... He's not always ultra aggressive in tests

They won't tee off, and we won't win - but if we manage to draw that would be huge
