Taylor should be demoted to 7 if there's no pressure from other players. Give Watling a promotion, he's a far better player

Watling is a gritty character... Will scrap tooth and nail to keep his wicket...

Taylor though... When he's in full flight... Playing both sides of the wicket... He's absolutely top drawer and Watling doesn't hold a candle to him.

Sadly hes a long way away from that form... And I'd take Watlings fighting character any day of the week before flashy potential...

Yeah but Taylor is so much like Shane Watson, albeit better. Can be a match winning, excellent player but most of the time is pretty ordinary. And bar a short bit of his career has always been like that.

Anyway, it's more a kick in the pants than a long term thing. Maybe if he gets pushed down the order it'll be the jolt he needs? Although Watling was a little bit poor on that dismissal too once I rated him lol

At least we've been fighting, Taylor aside no real soft dismissals - and while fair enough the Latham and Williamson ones could have gone our way - as long as we have a fit team I reckon we'll be better in the next two tests

The Big Macco departs

Edit: Just saw he was dudded, that's one bad call each for the captains this test

Unlucky for McCullum, he must be thinking about that wasted review on Watling.

And just as I type, Bracewell out plumb LBW. 2 more wickets to go

I don't think Marsh is a good enough batsman to come in at 6 but he is a pretty good bowler IMO. Still not keen on the balance he brings.

Marsh bowled very well in England with not much luck.

However, I agree that his batting has to improve, otherwise a specialist no. 6 batsman should be chosen instead.

No hotspot, but an edge clearly shows up on the snicko. Must have been a very faint edge.

NZ crumbling here in this session with 6 wickets gone so far.

That wicket of Williamson late yesterday - off the second last over before rain brought play to an end - was crucial. Had Williamson still been there this morning, I'd give NZ an outside chance of salvaging a draw.

Interesting, would have preferred the other side - I wonder if the sound was later than the ball - I don't think he hit it, that was a big sound and no hot-spot at all, which is bizarre - and Southee was pretty confident

At the end of the day, you can see why Long gave it, just not convinced it was right - the McCullum one was the costly one though, and a pretty poor decision from a very good umpire

NZ are so bad, this is our worst Aus team ever,we have Voges and Marsh in the top 6 ffs and our best batter Smith was a leg spin bowler just a few years back

I agree it was a poor decision from Long (overall, one of the better umpires on the ICC elite panel), but I agree with Tubby Taylor's comment regarding McCullum will be thinking about how he convinced Watling only a few overs earlier to review his LBW decision (which was out), which meant there were no more reviews at the moment that McCullum needed the review.

With some bowlers already battling injuries and niggles, it is the short turnaround with only 3 days to back-up for the next test in Perth. Will be interesting to see who comes into the side for Neesham, possibly Southee etc. Highly doubt Craig will play at the WACA. With the first three days projected to be 35+ degrees, they definitely don't want to be bowling 130 overs or so in the 1st innings such as what's happened in this test
