Phil Hughes into Aussie squad as cover for Ricky Ponting for Boxing Day Test

December 21, 2009
Australia have drafted New South Wales opener Phillip Hughes as cover for injured captain Ricky Ponting for the first Test against Pakistan at the MCG starting Boxing Day.

Australia expect Ponting to overcome his elbow injury and play, but have put Hughes on standby should the 35-year-old Ponting be forced out of his first Test in five years.

Ponting was hurt when struck on the elbow by a Kemar Roach delivery on the first day of the third Test against the West Indies at the WACA Ground.

The selectors also included paceman Peter Siddle in the 13-man squad, who has overcome the hamstring soreness that kept him out of Australia's win in Perth.

But there was no room for fellow paceman Ben Hilfenhaus despite him returning to cricket for his club side on the weekend.

Cricket Australia said Hilfenhaus reported more knee pain after he took four wickets for his club University.

Hughes, 21, was included in the squad after his good recent form which included a century for NSW in the first innings of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria in Newcastle.

The left-hander made a scintillating start to Test cricket in South Africa in February, but was dropped after the second Test against England at Lord's in July.

Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Hughes's elevation was to ensure "there is adequate cover in the event that Ricky Ponting does not recover as quickly as is hoped.

"The national selection panel has taken the opportunity of including Phillip Hughes in the squad given his exciting debut at international level against South Africa, his recent form in Sheffield Shield cricket and our view that he will be an important player for Australia moving forward.''

Siddle will play for Victoria in Wednesday's Ford Ranger Cup match against NSW at the SCG to get some match practice.

so Hilfy is sore but fit and omitted and Siddle is untried and subject to a ODI game, yet he has been named

Hilfy has a week to get over his soreness

are we not being told the whole story here ?

surely the pecking order would be something like

Notch, the Rug, Hilfy, Siddle

Hilfy pulls up sore after a club game so they omit him, Siddle pulls up sore in the middle of a test match and his fitness is yet to be proven

fmd, I dont believe these selectors

the worst thing from an Australian perspective, is that the selectors' stupidity almost makes you want the team to lose so they can see how wrong they are

Maybe they dont think Hilfenhaus is ready yet, maybe they think his injury is worse than first thought and after some bowlers who kept getting reinjured for the last 18 months trying to push themselves too hard to get back for certain tests and are now about to retire, they may want to take it safe with Hilfy and make sure he is right for Bellerive where he might be effective

Or they have decided that Siddle is worth the risk due to his superior average, economy rate and more wickets in 2009 than Hilfenhaus, added in with Hilfenhaus appalling FC record at the MCG and its not worth the gamble, then again they may not want him to play in Sydney with his average of 81 there and thats against a team thats been poor for years

you talking about Hilfy or Siddle

you can raise all the stats that may suit your argument, you'll have a hard time convincing anyone that Siddle's current form is better than Hilfenhouse

There is no doubt that Hilfy has been the form bowler of the past 6 months, while Bollinger has put his hands up recently.

Australia's biggest concern is that fat Merv sees our top two bowlers as Notch and Siddle.

Take a look at young Umar Akmal- one of the best batting prospects to emerge for a long time at first glance. He's a joy to watch

Who knows?

He scored 100 runs on debut on a pretty green wicket against an attack spearheaded by a better bowler than he is likely to face on this tour

Except that Hauritz has done his job.

No matter what you say about him, he has done his job ... unless you expect him to be Shane Warne.

If his job is NOT to take advantage of turning decks on days 4 and 5, yeah fair enough
