Someone on here mentioned how many of here wrote off Smith as being the worst player to ever play for Australia early on. I seem to remember Labuschagne getting a rough ride on here too. Has the tide changed?

More specifically the issue people had was that he was randomly picked at three and the selectors stated his ability to bowl legspin was the deciding factor in his selection. Or at least a major one.

So it wasn't so much that no one rated him, although plenty didn't, it was the sheer bizarre way he was picked for that Sydney test. If he'd been at six it would have been much less of an outcry.

The dude has absolutely reinvented himself though.
