Bury England's favourite son, eh? Allan Border once talked up Mark Haslam. It was the 93/94 tour of NZ, which included Border's first innings of 88 at Christchurch where he swept Dipak Patel for 4 to become the highest test run scorer at the time. Border played in a game against a NZ Chairman's XI or something of that nature. Haslam got 4 for about 115, and Border talked him up. I think AB was taking the mickey.
1992/93.
In that summer, 2 stockily built blonde haired cricketers went at it, announcing their arrival on the sporting stage and winning the hearts and minds of the sporting fans within their nations.
One went on to break all sorts of test records in his country's national sport, though never becoming captain of his national team. After retirement he has become a widely respected commentator and expert analyst.
