Good day for the Indians, 4 for 278. With the little master 70 no.

TBH I thought it was a very good day for us - they never got on top of us, and scored pretty slowly. Mills apart our bowling threatened...

Of course, whether it was a good day for us or not is overshadowed by our incompetent batting on day 1... if we had score 350-400 which would have been par, it'd be relatively even... But put the house on the fact that in the wash-up everyone's talking about our bowlers not our batsmen

Chris Martin gets Yuvraj early, proving again what an under-rated test bowler he is

Tendulkar 100

Tendulkar =

If any team claimed that catch against any of the Indian batsmen, they would have protested and threatened to pack up and go home.

Didn't see the incident, but the reports sound a bit dicey. Did it get referred upstairs?

no referrals in the series. The system is in a testing phase, I think the current SA-Aus match is the last game, and then the ICC will evaluate it, make any changes they deem necessary, and bring it into effect in all test matches.

Aside from that atilla, a lot of catches get checked by the third umpire to see if they carried or not.

Ross Taylor, another day another disgraceful exhibition of test match batting. He's not delivering on his potential. Maybe to open his eyes and give him a short, sharp, shock that he needs to bat to his potential in this line up they might consider bringing Elliott in. Elliott's not the most talented of batsmen, and I would suggest his first couple of test matches he didn't feel he was quite good enough, though I reckon the ODI hundred at Sydney will change that, but gees he will sell his wicket a lot more dearly than Taylor.

Not only was it just a dopey stroke in terms of the shot he was trying to play, but he had half an over to go to drinks and have batted out an hour with Flynn and he plays THAT shot. Woeful. Massively underperforming.

Kyle Mills is another, not up to test cricket. Not quick enough.

Out:

Franklin
Mills
Taylor

In:

Oram
Patel
Elliott

Broom could probably be in for Taylor too, he's willing to have a good dig.

Highlight of the day so far has been Martin Crowe giving it to Scott Styris in the commentary box over Styris' 'retirement' from test cricket to focus on one day cricket so he can play through to the next World Cup.

"One last question, you've decided to give up test cricket so you can continue bowling in one day cricket."

"Yes that's correct, I just feel that being able to bowl allows me to contribute more."

"Well, if I may I'd just like to say I think you're a good batsman but a very average bowler so I think your decision is wrong you have made a mistake."

Here here, Styris is being soft.

What is it with Kiwis retiring early? Is it a money thing as they can earn more overseas?

Either way you cant afford to lose the likes of Fleming, Styris and Bond before their use-by-date.

The ICL has a bit to do with it. You can add the names McMillan, Vincent, Adams, Hamish Marshall to that list. Probably McMillan and Bond are the two massive losses. New Zealand's pace bowling is too slow, the only one who puts it into the deck at all is O'Brien, and realistically he's more of your second strike bowler type than your main strike bowler. The sad thing with McMillan is he was probably in career best form when he ripped up stumps on his career.

I think the New Zealand first class structure which attracts pitiful crowds and average sponsorship doesn't pay enough for fringe or non-fringe international players to keep going for a long time. At the moment there's a few experienced blokes like Sinclair going around still, but you still hear them every now and then talk about giving it away.
