Yup, nothing says top 6 test batsman like an average of 28 after 41 innings, no hundreds and 6 half centuries (4 of those dismissed for between 50-57 runs). We've got a real keeper in this one.

Since he's come back into the side he is one of the very few to show any sort of grit and determination plus decent technical ability. Definitely worth perservering with instead of chucking a Cachopa brother in like a lamb to the slaughter who will then be dropped after 4-5 matches. In this side alone Guptil, Franklin and Brownlie should go before getting rid of Flynn.

Take your hand off it, Daniel Flynn definitely deserves to be in the side. Especially this current side.

He is now playing his 23rd test. Guess how many centuries he has. I will give you a hint. Less than 1.

How on earth does that even remotely make him deserving of being an international cricketer?

NZC has to review their first class structure. For a country the size of New Zealand, it can't sustain developing good cricketers having six first class sides. It doesn't test the premiere talent enough. About 15 years ago it developed a conference concept. Northern which was Auckland and ND, central which was CD and Wellington , southern which was Otago and Canterbury, and they had an international A team. If they can figure out how to financially cover a fourth team, it'd be far better in consistently testing players.

I would also be trying to get some of the fringe talents on short term contracts with the Australian states. That'd also bea great testing environment.

Again, you say this like we have a rich depth of talent sitting in FC Cricket waiting that is any better techinically or has the ability to succeed at International Cricket. And like I said in his return to Tests he has actually shown some balls and technique against the quicks. He'd be one of the openers in my NZ Test side personally. He wouldn't be averaging 40 but more often than not he would do his job as an opener a hell of a lot better than any other alternative.

I think the ineptitude of the batsmen is taking a lot of the spotlight away from the poor bowing too. In seemingly ideal conditions for quick bowlers, the Black Caps only had a very short period when they looked threatening. No consistent accuracy and maintained pressure.

No matter what way you shape it, his record is appalling. He simply does not make runs. That's his job. Not to be gritty or ballsy, but to make test centuries. Give him 3 more tests and be sure of it, but if he doesn't convert in those you have to be blunt and put a red line through his name.

I think we have England home and away so I'd give him those two series as an opener, I reckon he has ability to almost fill a Richardson type role there for us.

Can that Bradman-like batsman Alvira Petersen beat New Zealand by an innings himself?

Has that ever happened before?

Matt Hayden did it too.

Scored 110 from memory and Pakistan were rolled for around 50 in each innings
