Oval wants NRL action

MATCH ON: SACA chief executive Mike Deare wants a slice of NRL action at Adelaide Oval.

SOUTH Australia is set to become the new battleground for rugby league with Adelaide Oval likely to host two NRL matches a year.
Just a week after the State Government announced the Cronulla Sharks would play a match a year at Hindmarsh Stadium, the SA Cricket Association (SACA) is finalising negotiations with another NRL club.
SACA CEO Mike Deare would not reveal which club but confirmed it was not the Sharks.
“We are talking to one of the other NRL clubs about the possibility of playing two games a year at Adelaide Oval for a five-year period and they seem very interested in that,” he told the City Messenger.
“We will hopefully be in a position to announce it in the next couple of weeks.”
Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart said last week the Sharks hoped to make Adelaide its second home.
The Adelaide Oval deal would set up a battle for the hearts and minds of South Australians.
“Obviously the two clubs will both be playing in Adelaide so they’ll be competing to some extent for the market and supporters,” Mr Deare said.
He said SACA was in a race to confirm the deal before the NRL finalised its 2009 fixtures at the end of the month.
“We’re not 100 per cent sure it’s going to start next season, the original plan was that it would but the NRL are very keen to settle their program for 2009 and we may not have this arrangement in place in time, so it may not start until 2010.”
Mr Deare said SACA had been negotiating with the NRL and the un-named club for several months.
Adelaide Oval regularly hosted rugby league matches during the two years of the Adelaide Rams in the late 1990s, attracting crowds of up to 27,000.
Mr Deare said SACA expected crowds of more than 15,000 this time around.

Great time to be an NRL supporter in Adelaide

the adelaide oval was the home of all the rugby league matches before the rams and was the rams home ground before scheduling conflicts forced the rams to move to hindmarsh
im a fan of more league in adelaide but not at the adelaide oval

Cranky Sod - that would've been at Hindmarsh Stadium, with little/no promotion - correct?

This time it would be at Adelaide Oval - walking distance from the CBD. With a scerrick of promotion it would bring people through the gates.

I get the feeling it could be the Bulldogs too :?

Just as a note, comparative crowds at Adelaide Oval & Hindmarsh Stadium:

Hindmarsh Stadium hosted five games of NRL, four in 1998:
7,459 :: 7,445 :: 7,351 :: 7,035

And one in 2006: 7,017

Adelaide Oval has hosted 21 games.

1 each through 1991-1995...
1991: 28,884
1992: 18,892
1993: 20,246
1994: 12,874
1995: 8,987

And then 9 games during SL 1997 at an average of 15,330
Then 7 games during NRL 1998 at an average of 7,888.

Despite the 1998 decline, only a fool would choose HS over AO given a choice of the two.

Its all about how they market the game though. They wont get more then 15k to the Adelaide Oval, so having it there would be a waste and less of a spectacle. Hindmarsh is more suited to League and as long as the promote the game well then there is no reason to play it at Adelaide.

Ahh a bit of surprise news there... The Bulldogs had shown interest before in taking a couple of games on the road for 09, but when the Sharks locked in their deal for 3 years in Adelaide I thought they lost interest.

Definitely not a bad thing if this comes off, I always thought Adelaide Oval was a better place for a League team to play out of than Hindmarsh, due to the South Australian public's love to attend events there. Be a great guage to see if the Rams could ever be resurrected.

Well looks like League will be having a bit more of a national presence in 2009. Trial in Darwin and Perth, plus NRL games in Perth and Adelaide.

Good on the SACA for putting the Oval to good use in the (cricket) off season!

Best ground in Australia by a long way!

I hope it's Penrith, it's the only way they'll be able to lift their average above 11,000

Sounds ominous... could be testing the water for a relocation in 5 years time? ;-)

Great news, hope it comes off.

Interesting that it is the stadium driving it similiar to the stadium at Gosford driving to get games there. In Perth, Members Equity Stadium does very well out of concerts and claims they make twice as much money as holding sports events. With the new indoor entertainment centre due to be completed in the next couple of years MES will lose all its concerts and have to work alot harder to stay sustainable. Could be a catalyst to them bringing more games to Perth and seriously getting behind a Reds bid.
