Kiwis plan Tri Nations blockbuster

29 November 2005

New Zealand plans to use its new found power to push for a blockbuster opening to its Tri Nations defence on home soil next year.

The Kiwis want to cash in their huge upset win over Australia in the Elland Road final at the weekend and are already plotting a replay against the Kangaroos next year to kick off the Tri Nations tournament with a bang.

New Zealand Rugby League chairman Selwyn Pearson is keen to see the re-match played at the 50,000-seat Eden Park and he is supremely confident it would be a sellout.

The game would give the Tri Nations a huge kick-off given New Zealand embarrassed Australia 24-0 at Elland Road to end the Kangaroo's 27-year streak of not having been beaten in a series since losing to France in 1978.

The Kiwis continued their victory celebrations into a second day with weary players wandering around the foyer of the team's Leeds hotel wearing their Tri Nations medals and hugging everyone.

Next year they promise to be even stronger with the inclusions of exciting five-eighth Benji Marshall and world class forward Sonny Bill Williams who will make them even more explosive in the forwards.

Tri Nations organisers and major sponsor Gillette would have to support the Tri Nations opening with such a marquee game.

This year's tournament made a profit despite host Great Britain missing the final which drew just over 25,000 fans on a freezing night.

Rugby League World Cup Final was a sell-out in 1988 (just under 48,000).

That was the last game played there by rugby league. Union has done what it can to prevent repeat matches since.

The first game in next year's TN, especially if the Kiwis win the Anzac Test, would, arguably, be as big a game for New Zealand rugby league.

You are really a paranoid idiot aren't you ? I watch that match at Eden Park and it was a one off speacial occassion .
Rugby union has done nothing to stop league from playing at Eden Park you moron .
There was never any intentions to play any other matches at Eden Park after that RLWC final in 1988 .
It would have been a very costly had the kiwi's switch their test matches to Eden Park .
Calixte, Just look at how many rugby grounds have the Warriors played in since they enter the NRL .
Stop spreading false bull*hit rumours on the forum about NZ .

Grow Up

Where's Eden Park?

Auckland New Zealand and by the sound of things it won't be Eden Park for long .
They are selling the naming rights to help pay for its upgrading into a 60,000 capacity stadium .

I think Sel should think about how many turn up to watch the second tri-nation after the kiwi's beat the Aussies in the first game .

Go buy a copy of a book entitled "The International Grounds of Rugby League" by Trevor Delaney and then come back to me on this subject, dickheads (being waffler and te kaha, his dickless mate).

The facts are set out nicely for you two f**kwits there.

Good on Sel for being ambitious. Wherever it will be though, I'll be travelling across the ditch to watch the game. Being there with 60K other people would be great too!

Whats that got to do with Eden Park you f**kwit ?

Back to the post ! Here is how the NZRL adds up its numbers .

Christchurch fans, on the other hand, showed their appetite for top-class league when 17,000 fans this year watched the Warriors take on the Wests Tigers.

"If you can get 17,000 at a Warriors game, then I'd say we'd just about fill Jade Stadium when the Kiwis come to town," Pearson said.

I thought this guys would have learn from the Warriors and kiwi's numbers from previous games in Wespac Stadium in Wellington .

Tempers gentlemen.

Though why unionites have to continuously post on league forums is beyond rational thought.

Cant see it being at Eden Park and doubt 50000 would be there as a first game against the Roos. Final maybe but cant see that either. Auckers really arent that big when it comes to paying for a ticket and getting to games

eden park is a union ground but thats not to say they wouldnt play a tri- world cup game there.

so is Waikato Stadium
so is the ' cake tin' in wellington
so is the north harbour stadium where the kiwis have played aussie on a couple of recent occasions.

Calixte, you should let the publishers of "The International Grounds of Rugby League" by Trevor Delaney that their facts regarding eden park are wrong.

Eden Park has been in existence as a sports ground since 1900.

The Park became the home of Auckland Cricket in 1910.

The Auckland Rugby Union leased the Park in 1914 and it became the home of Auckland Rugby in 1925.

In 1926 Eden Park was put in a Trust (refer Eden Park Trust Board) that provided for the Trustees to manage the Park primarily for the benefit of Auckland Cricket and Rugby. The Trust has done so to this day but the Park has also hosted other community events.

During the past 105 years Eden Park has been the host to many memorable sporting occasions including:

Cricket

The first international between Auckland and Australia in 1914
The regular venue for test matches from 1952
New Zealand Crickets first ever series win against the West Indies in 1957
Four memorable games from the Cricket World Cup that was jointly hosted with Australia in 1992
The first international 20/20 match against Australia in 2005
Rugby

The first rugby international in 1921 between New Zealand and South Africa
The regular venue for test matches from 1930
New Zealand defeated the all conquering Springboks in 1956 for a series clinching win
The final of the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 (in which New Zealand defeated France)
Other community events included:

Athletics

1950’s saw the Auckland Schools’ Champion of Champions compete at the Park
1950 British Empire (now Commonwealth) Games
1961 - 63 Agfa International Meetings that saw New Zealand’s Olympic champions compete against the world’s best between the Rome and Tokyo Olympics.
2005 New Zealand challenges Australia over a mile during the interval at one Day Cricket International between the two countries
Royal Tours

1966 The Queen Mother
1970 The Queen
1983 The Prince and Princess of Wales
VIP Visits

2002 Dalai Lama
Concerts

The David Cassidy concert in 1974 was moved to Town Hall because of the threat of rain.
Today Eden Park with a capacity of 48,000 remains the Home of Auckland Cricket and Rugby providing the venue for international events for the Auckland region.

Ozbash, why has Calixte got things wrong? He mentioned that Eden Park has tried to prevent RL matches being played there. He cites this book - which one presumes has done some research - as a source. What's wrong with that.

Typically, two rah rah stooges 1. ask for a source to back up any anti-union accusations, and 2. claim there's no such thing as union politicking against league and that the leaguies are making everything up.

Personally, I would MUCH RATHER have a packed house at Ericsson than shift to Eden Park. A full house of LEAGUE supporters would be 1000% better than a large crowd of bandwagoners.

No, the book is not wrong. Nor am I.

Did I ever say it was a rugby union owned ground? No.

Did I ever say it wasn't a Trust controlled stadium? No.

The question is - which sport(s) influenced the trust? I will leave the rest to other posters. Suffice to say it's not too hard to guess judging by the title of this thread.

Thank you for your diligent research Mr Delaney. And thank you Screeny for your kind comments.

It's because their "sport" is so boring that they feel the need for some excitement.

It's also funny that a troll that almost never provides links to back his bullsh*t up insists that RL supporters provide links.
