2010 Crowd Watch II

Roosters now have a crowd average of 16613 which puts them in 6th place I think. Behind Brisbane Dogs Tigers Parra Saints.

Should stay vaguely around there, 2 games remaining, hopefully we draw 20k+ against Manly to make up for the likely 10k against the Titans.

It is a shame that it is a Monday night game, when you look at the table now that game could have a huge bearing on the top 4 and 8.

people refuse to go to anz because it's got supposedly poor viewing, but then they'll flock to the scg which must be close to the worst ground for viewing the game in sydney.

damn will sydneysiders buy anything that gets marketed to them.
Yeah but the SCG at least has heritage and charm to make up for the crap viewing, and is conveniently located near all sorts of pre-game/post-game entertainment options. ANZ is a concrete monstrosity in the middle of a barren wasteland so it doesn't have much going for it. Plus there's the fact that the SCG only has a couple of games a year so it has novelty value - the crowds would decline if we were playing there every week.

Obvious evidence there that Saints and Canterbury, closely followed by Parramatta, are the best supported teams in Sydney.
I think the great thing is that those games are attracting big crowds without much hype, which shows that attending games live is slowly becoming part of the culture.

Had yesterday's game been played at Kogarah, I reckon it still would have been around 1000 below capacity. Same thing happens at Parra Stadium for alleged "sell-out" games.

All the available tickets to the Eels match were sold, hence why it was called a sell out. What some people here need to understand is whilst Memberships are great in terms of reducing the number of 'small' crowds the NRL gets, and reducing the effect weather can have on a crowd, it also means more and more we are going to get 'sell outs' at our venues which have a capacity of 18 - 22K but end up with an announced crowd 1-2K less than that.

People who buy a membership at the start of the year may not necessarily be able to make all the big games, or even have a desire to, rather buying it as a financial commitment to their club (some clubs only around 50-60% of their members turn up to home games) or just to secure things like Grand Final tickets.

On the plus at least it still means the club gets the money in the bank, which helps our games profitability, plus it also continues to put a premium on seats, which leads to more sell outs, and encourages growth in membership numbers.

The Eels have had 2 sell outs this season, and another 3 games so far where their premium seats have been sold out. With this scenario there is a chance that by next year, the only way to secure a seat in the Mick Cronin or Ken Thornett Stand is to be a member, which is a great position for the club, and will be better for us crowd wise than it will hurt in the short term.

This is far from a unique problem to the Eels though, Dragons suffer from it for their big games at Kogarah and Wollongong, and the Broncos regularly suffer from it, just think back to the number of 'empty' seats you see in the lower tier at Suncorp Stadium in the TV arc. All those seats are sold... but members and sponsors aren't always turning up.

SCG is marketable because it is a great ground steeped in history, a mix of the heritage and the modern, hence for one or two games a year only it will get a good crowd.

View isnt that bad either, especially at the front of the top decks.

I agree that Chruchill and Brewongle are better than O'Reilly, but i think they were in the catagory of Trumper Stand, and the Trumper was sold first. Also, Brewongle was roosters members.

Although St George has probably the largest number and widest geographical distribution of supporters, its average home crowds are below Tigers and Canterbury who have been the highest drawing Sydney teams for the last 6 years.

Yet we have the highest number of ticketed members and get amazing support at every away game.

Easy to have high number of season ticket holders when you have 2 stadiums and have split packages and the dogs also get big away support, we have lacked a bit this year cause we are struggling but our home average is still 6k more then the Dragons and your mob is leading the comp, imagine if it was reversed lol

We also play at stadiums which are way smaller than yours. Imagine if we played at SFS and you played at Belmore.

Home crowd averages ( in Sydney) to date:

Bulldogs 22 412
Tigers 17 966
Parramatta-17 366
Souths 17 196
St George- 16 882
Roosters- 16 613

So considering bulldogs and parra are in the bottom half of the ladder, i think that's pretty good. Does the bulldogs figure include the double header?

That Bulldogs figure does include the double header, however that website isn't the official statistical website for the nrl. NRLStats has the average at around 20,800 - that figure not including the DH

Its a bit unfair to compare apples and oranges. Dragons home crowds are very disrupted this year through several different factors:

* we were the home side for the ANZAC match,
* the stadium redevelopment at WIN Stadium forcing the club to schedule all early games down south (eg we would have played the Bulldogs and Sharks in a packed Jubilee Oval normally), and
* the last 2 home games have been on raining Monday nights, but still drawing around 12k.

Last year is a better guide to the home crowds, then add 3-5% for the general growth that we have seen across the NRL this year. That would be a more reasonable assesment of the club this year.

that alone would surely be enough to make up for any other 'mishaps'

I guess you could say the same thing for alot of teams. Parra had 2 sell outs so you can argue that our figure would be much higher if stadium capacity was higher.

In addition to that, for the game vs Storm, the weather was absolutely attrocious and even though there was way more tickets that were pre- sold only 7500 came on the night .

Sadly I see little difference in crowd patterns this year than the last few, some big crowds, some teams doing reasonably well 75% of games and some down right embarrasing crowds under 10K again. The 30K plus crowds in Sydney have been great to see but its how we get them more regularly that we need to be working on. Then we need to look at how the teams that are getting around the 10-12K regularly (as these are the ones who tend to drop below 10K if weather is poor or team is poor) can get them up to 15K ie Warriors, Canberra, Storm (ok there are circumstances for them I realise), Sharks, Penrith etc

I realse it is early days for memberships and the knock on effect that will have but I would hope to be seeing some gradual increasing over the next year or two.

I forgot it was on a Monday. Cut that prediction to 8k. Cowboys, Raiders and Titans never draw a half decent crowd against the Roosters.
