Up in Sydney on the weekend and had Friday night off so went and saw the GF replay. Bit disappointing crowd, but it was pissing down rain and the people around me definently made up for the atmosphere. I'd prefer 7,000 or 8,000 or whatever it was at Parra than 10,000 at ANZ though.

reduce the number of teams and you lose hundreds of thousands of supporters, its as simple as that!

yes the crowds were terrible, but it was also one of the worst days and weeks for weather that i have ever seen for sydney, and the stupid, drawn out origin schedule always impacts on crowds. sydney crowds this year have been great, they have never, ever been bigger.

I don't accept that. Look at the Tigers. Two teams successfully merged.

Reducing the number of Sydney sides would be a bad idea in terms of demographics and geography. Most of NSW population and indeed a fair whack of the whole countires population is in the triangle formed by Penrith, Newcastle and Wollongong. Thus, there is going to be a concentration of teams and naturally Sydney being the largest city has the majority of teams. This generates proper cross city derbies and investment is usually concentrated in the largest urban areas.

Broncos V Rabbitohs 27,000
Cowboys V Raiders 14,500
Knights V Warriors 14,500
Storm V Roosters 10,000
Titans V Sea Eagles 17,000

Av = 16,600

At the halfway mark of the season there has been 1,593,991 fans attend games. This is an average of 16,604 fans per game.

At the same time during the 2009 season the figures read 1,579,725 with the average crowd being 16,455.

Thats an increase in the average crowd for this season of 149 or .9 of a percent.

As for individual teams there average crowds for this season so far are compared to season totals for 2009.

Teams that increased there average crowds

Melbourne up by 7,223 an increase of 60.3 percent (ave 2010 crowd 19202)
Parramatta 4,987 38 (18,118)
Canberra 2,382 21.6 (13,409)
St George Illa 2,721 17.7 (18,086)
Souths 1,915 13 (16,652)
Wests 2,382 11.6 (19,980)
Brisbane 1,879 5.8 (34,378)
Canterbury 253 1.3 (20,261)

Teams that decreased there average crowds

Manly down by 36 a decrease of .3 percent (13,745)
Cronulla 595 5.2 (10,769)
Penrith 777 5.7 (12,941)
Newcastle 1,045 6.6 (14,837)
Syd Roosters 1,567 11.9 (11,644)
Nth Qld 2,161 12.5 (15,148)
Gold Coast 2,654 14 (16,286)
Warriors 2,560 16.6 (12,894)

DC Fan - interesting analysis, although it would be better to have compared 2010 averages with 2009 averages to the same point in the season.

That would be more like with like. Over the whole season you have things like the weather gets worse from now for a couple of months, people lose interest in their team losing touch with the competition, SOO where people are less inclined to go to games without the stars - all of these would deflate the full season average but are yet to have much impact in 2010 so far. On the other hand, things like Parra's run at the end of last season would have boosted crowds late last year and pushed the season average up.

So Dogs averaging over 20,000, second only to Brisbane, yet we're near the bottom of the ladder. Shows how much support the Dogs have.

Crowd looks decent at Skilled, 18k perhaps. One of the better ones for them for the year i think. Obviously Origin week has helped up in QLD.

Hopefully the Cowboys and Broncos can both have strong crowds too. I would imagine Souths will have a few supporters in Brisbane.

It also helps when you play your home games in a modern stadium instead of a dated suburban cow paddock that holds 15k like so many of the Sydney clubs continue to.

I really don't get why people insist on trying to reduce Sydney-based teams. It would be really silly. A helluva lot of people follow the teams but just don't go to games.

I think it's a bit of where we're at currently.. The push for memberships is definitely going to boost crowds over the next 10+ years. If you get rid of any Sydney based team, you'll end up losing that market.

North Sydney is a prime example of that. We NEED to get the central coast playing at least 2-3 games / year at Nth Sydney. The corporate support out this way is massive. On top of that, I know many x Norths supporters.

It's our strength and our weakness. We need a team in CC, Central Qld, Perth & maybe another in NZ. That would get us to 20 and we'd then be able to play games in NSW, QLD, NZ weekly. That'd be ideal. The value of the Sky contract with a 2nd NZ team would double + local interest. I guess you'd have to get the warriors back to 'Auckland' Warriors in the next 2-3 years to allow it.
