Seeing as dicussion in all the other threads is solely about Sandow leaving I wanted to start one about the halfback position for next year.

Our options and my thoughts:
  • Adam Reynolds - young but inexperienced, may not be up to relying solely on him next season
  • Craig Gower - proven performer but with 3-4 years out of the NRL might struggle like Orford and he will be 33 next year so no long term option
  • Brett Finch - proven performer too but may not be what Souths require
  • Beau Champion - is after a new home for next season and is a souths boy at heart. Would love to see him back at the club. I recall he played in the halves in his junior years. Although we may have burned him with the poor treatment in him leaving
  • ???

What are the odd's that Cronk will exercise his getout clause and come to play with his ex team-mates Crocker and Inglis under his old assistant coach Maguire?

In mid 2008 Storm reportedly signed him for 4 years at 250k per year tying him up till 2013 but there is a get out clause for the final two years. If we were offering Sandow 300k or so surely we can offer Cronk something? At least have a try?

I forgot Beau Henry if Darius Boyd goes to Newcastle and he's forced out of the halves to accomdate Gidley.

I say Reynolds. Yes he is inexperienced at the top level but definetely has a future unlike someone like Gower. He was the half that took them to the TC grand final last year if i'm not mistaken?

Cronk will be too expensive if we only have 300k or so to spend.

Could be the answer. But yet to play anything higher then U-20's. Missing most if not all this season with injury will not help.

Craig Gower - proven performer but with 3-4 years out of the NRL might struggle like Orford and he will be 33 next year so no long term option
Been away from the NRL and Rugby League for far too long. Will turn 34 next season.

Brett Finch - proven performer too but may not be what Souths require
Has said he doesn't want to play halfback. Five-Eight is his position. He is 30, so really wouldn't be a long term option. Plus he is returning from England.

Beau Champion - is after a new home for next season and is a souths boy at heart. Would love to see him back at the club. I recall he played in the halves in his junior years. Although we may have burned him with the poor treatment in him leaving

Heard to day that he is not taking up his option not to stay in Melbourne after this year. Some teams were mentioned as to where he could end up. Souths wasn't one of them. I really don't see him as a halfback.

So you can at least double that...

Johnny Larkin might make a comeback.
That is if Rusty has forgiven him for his mention in his best seller The Johnny Larkin Daries.

Reynolds AND Finch. Reynolds at 7 and Finch at 6, Sutton certainly isn't a 6 and it would be good for Reynolds to be partnered up with a veteran.

I don't think we can go with two inexperienced halves.

Thus it is either Reynolds or Mundine, with Finch (in terms of what we have heard).

That said, lets see what Madge has up his sleeve, because there have been a few others mentioned, which should only increase now that Sandow will be leaving.

Sutton to 13 or the bench

I agree Ziggy, let's see what Maguire has planned but am i the only one on the forum that rates Brett Seymour in our current predicament or is he not worth considering ?

What's wingy doing? Are him and Russ on good terms? Didnt souths do him a favour by granting him a release to chase big dollars in japan.

Finch at 5/8 seems obvious, Moltzen at halfback if he wants to get out

I really can't give a judgement on Reynolds until he has played an NRL match. But hopefully Maguire is looking at his NYC matches and making a good decision

reynolds and whoever Maguire may bring with him ( no no no to Gower) with young Roberts worth a try at half . i would try him this year if Sandow were to miss a game.
