Based on the 22 teams already qualified, it's looking like one of the toughest UCLs on record with no easybeat debutantes. Throw in the likes of Arsenal, Milan, Schalke, Lyon, Basel, Zenit, PSV, and Celtic from the qualifying stage and we've got ourselves a massive season ahead.

The first qualifying round starts in exactly a month on July 2.

Bayern will be big favourites. I see the English challenge coming from Chelsea under Mourinho. Barcelona and Madrid to be there abouts. They would be the final 4 for me, although lets see what changes the silly season brings. Dortmund i'm not sure can reach the dizzy heights of last season.

First and second qualifying round draw results

Published: Monday 24 June 2013, 12.30CET

Involved in last year's group stage or beyond, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Celtic FC and FC BATE Borisov discovered their opponents at Monday's first and second qualifying round draws.

Defeated by Juventus in last season's UEFA Champions League round of 16, Celtic FC will begin their 2013/14 campaign with a second qualifying round tie against Cliftonville FC of Northern Ireland.

The first and second qualifying round draws both took place in Nyon on Monday, with former European Cup winners Celtic and FC Steaua Bucureşti among the clubs to discover their opponents. While Celtic have a British derby on their hands, Steaua have been pitted against Macedonian First League champions FK Vardar in the second round.

As well as Neil Lennon's side, there were two other teams involved in the draw who had participated in last term's group stage. FC BATE Borisov kick off their latest European campaign against Kazakhstani outfit FC Shakhter Karagandy, with GNK Dinamo Zagreb taking on CS Fola Esch from Luxembourg.

Elsewhere, Paulo Sousa, a UEFA Champions League winner in successive seasons as a player – with Juventus in 1996 and Borussia Dortmund in 1997 – will start life at the helm of Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC with a tie against Hungarian club Győri ETO FC.

The first qualifying round unfolds on 2/3 and 9/10 July. The second round games will be played over two legs on 16/17 and 23/24 July. The 16 victorious sides must navigate the third qualifying round and a play-off to reach the group stage. The likes of Olympique Lyonnais, FC Zenit St Petersburg and PSV Eindhoven await them in the third qualifying round.

You'd expect most of those seeded non-champions to go through, although PSV or Fenerbahçe could be tricky

The Goners won't have Suarez for the ties because he's waiting to see if they actually qualify. They could very well lose to a PSV or Fenerbahce, particularly if they are away in the 2nd leg.

It is but have Fenerbahce actually been reinstated officially?

The appeal is being held in between the two legs (ooo err mrs) and UEFA have not said what will happen if Fener win but then get thrown out. It is not a definite that Arsenal would qualify.

i think Suarez will definitely put that move on hold for a few weeks.

he could go down for the second leg and just sign for whoever wins of course...

If Fenerbahce get chucked, UEFA are f**ked. They already played in the third round, so that team (Red Bull Salzburg) could rightfully lodge their appeal too .... would they have to have another play off between Arsenlol and this Austrian money pit to decide who goes into the group stages?? Last year I think when FC Sion got thrown out and Smelltic got in it was their first game of qualifiers so it was a straight swap.

Metalist have been kicked out from the CL 13-14 according to Bild Sport in facebook. No link yet and nothing on Eurosport or uefa.com that I saw so I guess it's developing

Schalke-Gegner Metalist Charkow wurde soeben von der Uefa für die Champions League disqualifiziert. Ob Schalke dadurch automatisch weiterkommt, steht noch nicht fest. Gleich mehr auf BILD.de.
