Ch 9 didn't want fixed scheduling
we'd of got more money without it....

it was brought in to increase attendances & memberships
memberships increased by about 10%
while attendances fell by about 5% .so not a great result in its first year.

whats wrong with scheduling the 2nd half of the season games only for each round ... but not the days they're played til later on

ie
rnds 1 to 13 fixed in Nov
then
14 to 26 with the games & the dates of the weekend only

& they're fixed in on a rolling time line from round 10 onward ?

Exactly my point, getting rid of fixed scheduling benefits Channel 9 only, nobody else.

After only one season, surely its far to "David Gallop" to change it so quickly.

Id like to understand why people think fixed scheduling is "hurting" crowds??

But why? So Channel 9 can schedule games? Who cares?

Surely its more important that the needs of the paying customer come first?

But the TV deal is signed? Are we that concerned that we now need to re-structure the whole shebang after one season into a five year deal? (And David Gallop was called knee jerk).

LU is so bi-polar, on the one hand its "we bent over to the TV channels" then nek minnit its "Let's do all we can to ensure that TV gets there way!"

so you'd prefer lame Friday night or Sunday arvo match ups that .. no one attends
or watches on TV
so some goose who was never going to attend anyway .. knows when the lame arsed game was on ... back in November of the year before :sarcasm:

Ch 9 I think may have slotted in shithouse games on purpose to get this changed
and they'll keep doing it til it is ....

Low ratings hurts Ch 9's hip pocket, not Rugby League's. Its year 1 of a 5 year deal.

If the main reason we should get rid of fixed scheduling is so Channel 9 can select games to suit them, than I say f**k them.

what snot
its hurting our code

Conversations on Fridays in offices all over NSW & QLD.............
whats the game on telle tonight ?

meh ..... some crap game !!
so you aren't gunna watch it ?
nah , lets go to the pub & play pool instead

if people start to do this regularly like they were this year ..
then we're in trouble as they start to lose interest altogether

we need our biggest n best games of the round being shown to the largest numb of people
I don't care that it helps Ch 9's ratings
I also don't care if people don't know what games are being played when 12 months from now if the alternative is we all get better games to watch on TV ....

So based on your extensive research, after just one year, lets bin fixed scheduling for the first 20 rounds, and have it for the first 13 rounds only. (Is that 7 weeks really that bigger a deal?)

Ch 9 ratings dropped of 1.8%??? Is that really a big enough dip to change the whole system just yet? What happens if the GF rates its balls off??

Your assuming that picking the games 10 weeks out means that CH 9 will go for the best contest, not as they currently do what the perceive to be the highest rated teams. (i.e. forget about Raiders, Storm or Cowboys matches)

If its all about ratings, then forget about getting Raiders, Storm or NQ games on TV, they could be running 1st and undefeated, but CH 9 would still prefer the Eels, Tigers, Broncos or Dogs match

I also didn't realise that pool was the NRL's biggest threat in regards to TV ratings..........

I don't think the game is losing as much interest as 9/DT want us to believe, I'd say those going to the pub are watching it with many others.

The fact that Friday night is a night people go out after work, 9 need to deal with the fact that tv isn't the draw card it once was and not everyone races home to watch 9 News and the Footy, even though they are NRL fans.

More Sunday Arvo games please (for broncs), as a season member I hate only having Friday night and monday night games, the best game all season was the one Sunday game we had this season.

Edit: also hate Thursday night games, good for the person watching at home but for the fan who has to go to the game I don't like them.

Souths to play more Sunday arvo games, especially at home in Sydney.

Can we also play St George, Parra, Raiders and Broncos twice next year? That'd be great.

I think you're putting the answer before the question tbh, I don't know that anybody is saying fixed schedule is the bane of anyone's existence.

I don't believe my suggestion is in any way "getting rid of fixed scheduling". It's tweaking the current format to allow for a better schedule. Three blocks of ten (or some of the alternative suggestions mentioned since) is still a huge improvement on what we had prior to last year.

Timmah, can you clearly explain why you think this is a better system? And who it benefits?

I tend to agree - I think any club sees an increase in crowd numbers with Sunday afternoon games.

I would also love Saints to play Souths and Parra twice. The teams that have history with your club but for obvious reasons probably not the Raiders:?

I don't believe the schedule was optimised to it's potential this year. Whether you like it or not ratings are an important part of the game - they increase advertising revenue and drive bigger and better sponsorship for our game and the clubs.

I'm not advocating a return to the old 5-week system which most fans (including me) despised - it didn't work either. Hell, I'd love all 26 weeks done up-front but I don't think that's the best result for all.

I don't think saying "stuff Channel 9" is the answer to our question, basically.

But if its all about ratings, I can't see why a CH 9 will choose anything different to last year. (i.e. it will be Broncos every Fri night again regardless and the big Sydney clubs regardless of how they are travelling).

In short you seem to have enormous faith in CH 9.

Channel 9's ratings were down last year so they'll be looking at changing up things a little. Either way, we're both speculating

There will be future TV deals.

Give fixed scheduling another year or two if you want but if crwods stay the same or get worse then what is the point of keeping it when its main justification was for the crowds and fans.

Edit: And since when did LU only have one voice? I never thought we bent over to the TV channels.

The fixed schedule is not the reason for the drop in ratings.

Channel Nine would have picked the same teams anyway.

The fixed schedule is not the reason for the drop in ratings.
but it is the easy thing for people (including ch9 and the nrl) to use as the reason even though there's more to it.

The afl have been using a fixed schedule for years, they also have all games live on fox and 3-4 live each week on fta yet they seem to have great crowds and tv ratings.

There was also a suggestion that 9 do a friday game on their main channel and the other one on gem. Won't happen as the network then has two channels effectively competing for the bulk of the same target audience. I think they should be pissing off the delayed game on Fridays.

There's plenty that the nrl need to look at but the fixed schedule is the easiest thing to blame without the nrl taking responsibility for a decline in their product.
