2014 NRL Draw

Agreed - The only way the ARLC would get more money for less product would be if the quality of each game was much, much higher and therefore demanding huge audiences

That would mean a concentrated player pool - say 12 teams each playing home and away for 22 games

That would mean merging or culling of clubs, rather than expansion and whoops, look we have another Super League f**k up.

It's about as likely as that bird from the "internet pays me $97 an hour" ad reaching out of my screen and giving me a hand job as I type this.

PS If she could do that, she'd be getting more than $97 a hour......

I'd doubt even that would be enough. I don't think many fans would specifically go out of their way to watch a game purely because its going to be a high class, cracker match.

I watch a lot of footy, but outside of the Eels, its mainly because I have nothing else doing and I like watching footy. I don't think I've EVER made specific plans to watch an NRL game (GF excluded) as a neutral purely because I looked at the two teams and thought it would be a great game to watch.

Can anyone explain to me the reason for the delayed telecast?

Conferences is the dumbest idea going around ffs

Because??

Unless you have each team playing every other team an even number of times, you have artificially skewed the comp. So if you are going to do that anyway, you might as well do it in a way that benefits the NRL.

Conferences for "Draw Purposes" are fine, but they don't work for determining who is playing in the finals.

That's why.

This obsession with seppo bullshit like conferences that this forum has is crazy. Half the comp plays in Sydney what's the point in conferences? You might as well just guarantee every Sydney team plays each other twice to bump up interest.

We all know that a 15 game draw (play each side once) or a 30 game draw (play each team twice) is never going to happen because it suits neither the broadcasters (too few games) nor the players (too many games). Add the fact that SOO robs teams of their best players for a handful of weeks and it becomes fanciful that we'll have a fair draw.

Given 9 of 16 teams play out of Sydney, I don't think you can simply say all the Sydney teams play each other twice without vastly increasing the number of games played, which is unlikely to happen. But if it were possible to guarantee Sydney teams play each other twice then of be all for it.

What I don't get is your "anti Seppo " rant. Apart from the use of the word "conferences", what has been suggested by a number of people is nothing like the conference set up used in the NBA, NFL & MLB where finals series are set up around conferences, as opposed to merely skewing the draw through the use of "groups" (is that a better word to use than conferences?)

Ratings bring advertising $. If there are no stoppages in play to show ads, how are good ratings of much use?

Ch 9 & Fox need to cover their outlay, not only in broadcast right costs but the broadcast production costs themselves.

The game can't have it's cake & eat it too. I can't see why this is so hard to understand.

The delayed Sunday game on Nein is cringeworthy. I won't even watch a Roosters game during that abomination of a broadcast.

It's an outdated disgrace which makes the NRL a laughing stock.

Every time I see this thread bumped I have hoped to see some actual news about the 2014 draw.

How dumb am I?

Aren't there enough other threads to whinge about Channel 9 on?

Have people forgotten the absolute stinkers Nine pikes during the last 6 weeks which were not fixed? Nine can only blame themselves for the horrendous ratings. With a fully fixed shedule the NRL may be able to save nine from their own ineptness.

the nrl should do something like the afl and set up the draw so that everyone plays each other once, the strong teams play each other twice and the weak teams play each other twice. will set up more blockbuster games and should reduce the number of blowout scorelines.

How about if the teams play each other twice and the team who comes first wins the comp.

How about start the game live and throw the ads in making it the 2 hour spectacle they currently have with the delayed game? It's not perfect for the viewer because you can still stumble across a final score before you see the end of the game but it limits the potential problem.

I quiet like that idea, or adding an extra 5 minutes to the half time break to fill full of ads. Either option is more preferable than the current Sunday delayed game. I doubt things will change though.

Not a bad idea!

What was wrong with it JC? Everyone wanted to see the wooden spooners play 4 of the last 6 on FTA.

As a die hard eels fan I hated it. Nothing worse than having to wait to watch a delayed game, knowing full well your team is probably going to be thrashed.

Not the Eels fault they were chosen but Ch 9 need to take some of the blame for the ratings, as JC points out.

As much as some teams rate very well compared to others, however after a while, the general public get over watching the same teams week in, week out. Familiarity breeds contempt.

As a fan of a club that apparently doesn't rate well, I'm happy to see the clubs that do rate well (& bring $ into the game via TV rights) get more FTA games. However it needs to be a bit better balanced if Ch 9 are going to get maximum return on investment by keeping the average fan interested in their broadcast.
