I know people who don't go to games because of this. Your average battler at their local can watch the game for free with $5 glass schooners.

Meanwhile, make the effort to go and support your club at ANZ and you get treated like a child with $8 plastic lights.

I'm not advocating glass at the footy but I don't see why we can't have full strength beer.

Rround-ball football in England. No alcohol to be taken to your seat or in areas in sight of the pitch.

They still do alright getting crowds.

The culture of needing a drink at all costs in order to enjoy yourself in Oz is fairly f**kin sad.

Re the drinks they had 4 different full strength beers to choose from plus two full ciders. Maybe RL fans just can't be trusted with full strength beer lol.

Then the RSA staff should stop serving them. Don't take it out on the rest of us that want a decent beer, not a watered down thing at $8 a pop!

Cronulla are doing a really good job at improving the game day experience. More food and booze outlets with a better range, members bars in the ground, better sound, more screens, the stadium has had a lick of paint, kids allowed on the field, jumping castles and rides, big inflatable shark mouths to walk through at the ticket gate, game day volunteers and ushers. Little things and big things.

It's the Lyall Gorman influence and it's bloody fantastic. A shame the team on the field isn't doing better because the crowds would be flocking in if they weren't hopeless.

To suggest beer prices and/or strength is a key reason for poor attendances is ludicrous.
Poor game day experience contributes though.

It's a bit frustrating when you pay 100 bucks fro a ticket to the prelim and your only option is mid strength beer, at a pretty high price.

I'm generally not too fussed, most times you can get a beer pregame somewhere. Plus I like rugby league anyway, I can easily not drink.

But when it comes to casuals, people not necessarily diehards, seeing a poor game day experience, which can include only having the option of an expensive, mid strength beer, is just shitty.

SFS was selling full strength the other day, but you have the choice of VB or Carlton. SCG is similar, mids only, and it's carlton mid.

Compare to say baseball in the states. Much longer event but you can get a whole range of beers. They have your standard shit beers like Budweiser but there are local craft options, stuff which has a decent taste.

It's better.

Went to the wildcats basketball at the new perth arena this year. Price was the same but the whole game day package was so far ahead of anything I've been to at an nrl game it isn't funny.

Penrith have pretty much anything you want to drink as for food even has a 1950's style diner now.

You are right RL is light years behind on the pre-game experience

Non-alcoholic beer is sold in the La Liga in Spain.

With daylight savings finishing this week and Easter Sunday being the first Ch9 Sunday 4:15pm match that will finish after sunset, I will be interested to see how crowds respond to this day/night fixture during May to mid-August, when sunset in Sydney is at least earlier than 5:15pm (which is approximately when the 2nd half kicks off at) and the second half is played under lights. If we get some cloudy, wet and windy Sundays during the middle of winter at suburban venues like Brookvale with large hill areas, that will undoubtedly have an impact on crowds as it will already be dark at 4:15pm. Also, playing conditions. Rabbitohs/Tigers match finished at about 6:10pm. In the middle of winter on a clear day (with sunset approx. 5pm), teams will have to adapt to change in conditions from playing in dry, sunny conditions in the first half to dew on the ground late in the 2nd half.

Sunday 4:15pm venues for Rds 5-20 are as follows:

Allianz Stadium, ANZ Stadium, Newcastle, Cairns, Wagga Wagga (City-Country Origin), Parramatta Stadium, Newcastle, Canberra, Kogarah Oval, Cronulla, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Leichhardt Oval, Brookvale Oval, Cronulla, Brisbane, Belmore Sportsground

But expensive food prices is a legit reason?

Why wouldnt high priced, understrength alcohol contribute? Its the reason I dont go to ANZ besides big finals games or whatever. I dont much to any ground but im certainly not going to ANZ and paying for watered down piss, not when I could just go to the pub or watch it at home.

Exactly, if we want better crowds, we have to give a better experience. More Australians than not like a drink. If we want to increase the 15,000 to 30,000 the gamely experience has to improve and that doesn't just mean more games or better refs, that means maybe some music, better drink options, better food options (Penrith have the last one perfect).

This won't please Timmah..he said it wasn't a factor. Well hello Timmah it is more than me. Well said, and ANZ is the worst one as there is no pubs nearby that sell full strength, you have the stupid Brewery and its mid strength rubbish as well.

We are better than soccer.. They have the same stadium issues but make it worse for the spectators at the ground than at home... How? They don't allow any controversial incidents be replayed on the screens at the ground, yet they get replayed for the viewers at home.

Soccer is lucky, they don't play at ANZ every weekend! in fact don't they only just play WC Qualifiers there?

Yes the Brewery that rip off place with mid strength rubbish. My point stands, I want a full strength drink. If you are going to charge me full strength prices it has to be that, not full strength prices for mid strength rubbish.

The one time I went to ANZ last year I went with 3 mates and we just snuck in a bottle of vodka and it was good. The stadium aint getting my business if they don't fix the drink rates at least. The food, meh I usually have Subway or something, but the drinks....I don't go to the game to get drunk, but I like 2-3 beers.

yes i agree it's a rip off, and i don't mind a drink myself (i normally stick to the bourbon though). if you travel by train, an idea is to get off at lidcombe (which is the station before olympic park) and there is a pub on either side of the station that has cheap(ish) full strength beer, and when you've had enough catch the olympic park sprint train and your at the stadium. you know it makes sense

Everyone at the footy can eat food.

Nobody under 18 can drink.

Food prices are a definite issue as opposed to f**king alcohol.

The new members at the scg is fantastic. Heaps of great food options (burgers, fish and chips, pizzas but trendy shit not just a cheese burger, great hot chips), about 10 different types of full strength beer.

Will be attending most swans games this year simply for that. It's just as good as going to a pub but then you get live sport as an added bonus. With the NRL at ANZ it's the opposite, get live sport heaps far away then shit food and drink.
