A relatively poor final series this year means the year's total will be 20k less than last year or -0.75%. The worst in more than 10 years
AFL will finish down 8k or -0.1% the worst since 2002
The AFLs brave expansion move of 5 years ago may well have substantial results over the next few years
AFL is up 38K so far, or 9%, and thats with the Swans, GWS, and the poorly supported Western Bulldogs all going deep into the finals.

Hardcore AFL fans, who are mates of mine went along on Friday night to the MCG.

They reckon there is no way there was 70k at that game, they swear to me that the top tiers were very sparsely populated and reckon it was closer to 50k tops.

I haven't watched a second of vision of the game, so I couldn't comment on the veracity of that claim.

Crowds were pretty good over the weekend I thought, credit where it's due. Putting crowds aside, something has to be done about the scheduling. How wasted and fatigued were the Cowboys and Thurston? Same guys for Cameron Smith on Saturday. The NRL is killing off these athletes. They really should get rid of these pointless Prime Ministers sides as well as the Four Nations.

Scheduling? Cowboys had a full seven days between matches, and Smith had two weeks! What the f**k do you expect?

REDUCE the season to 18 games and make the games more meaningful, especially around Origin time. As for the four nations, they're only moderately popular as it is. Besides the die hards, not too many people care about Rugby League much after the Grand Final.

Smith had two weeks, and this has nothing to do with internationals

Well you'll be pleased to hear this years Four Nations will be the last.. but not sure you'll like the alternative.. ditching Internationals is extremely backwards thinking.

But I agree with reducing the club season, with stand alone Origin/International weekends.

Where does it say this will be the last?

From all reports they are revising the International schedule to something like this.

Year 1 - Tours
Y2 - Intercontinental Cup - 6-8 team
Y3 - Tours & WCQs
Y4 - World Cup

With maybe an RLIF 9's at the start of years 1 & 3.

Whatever they do, they need to spare the athletes and give them some time off. Can you see how because they play sooo many games during the season the games themselves have very little meaning?

I'm a season ticket holder myself and id rather pay the same money to see 7 real quality home games rather then 3-4 quality games with good crowds at the rest with low crowds and low quality games.

The average supporter from my observations over the years doesn't care too much about the footy after the grand final.

Other major codes play even longer - soccer for example 27 rounds here in Aus, 38 in England. Often with less breaks between games.

I don't understand any calls for a reduction in season and I doubt it will ever happen.

soccer is a game for women
its not a valid comparison with a collision sport like League

in saying that
I don't know how you'd compensate broadcasters for them losing 72 games
nearly a third of the season
we already have a rep schedule , so you can't go to them & say we'll replace club games with a rep program.

the game can't afford to lose 33% of its media revenue
so it will never happen.

Currently we have 16 teams playing a total of 192 season matches.

My preference is for an 18 team comp with each team playing 20 games, which would give us 180 matches.
The extra 4 weeks would be used for a club comp freeze during Origin period, played alongside Pacific 4N and NZ v England international tournaments. The less total games would allow for a greater post-season international schedule with less resistance due to player burnout.

There would be a short term sacrifice but within a few years the expansion of both club and international tournaments would give us more value than a few rounds in a drawn out club season.

I can't see any reduction in games happening either, not without a massive reduction in TV monies, but you've selectively chosen a sport to suit your argument. I wonder why you didn't mention the 16 game NFL season for example?

To compare soccer to a collision sport like League is hardly apples with apples.
