Booked tickets to some Brisbane fixtures on Friday for work. Pax figures are great so far.

Broncos vs Warriors: 34,934
Broncos vs Cowboys: 38,020
Double header which is not a Broncos home game, meaning members have to buy seats: 36,793.

With the expectations on them and the attractive style of footy they play, this could be Brisbane's best ever year for crowds.

The NRL has all but given up on increasing crowds. They admit as much in the annual report. Apparently happy to compromise fans at games for eyes on tv. New 15k stadium strategy required!

depending on weather the raiders should get a decent crowd, hopes are higher this year then they have been for a while. Penrith don't tend to draw that well in canberra but I still wouldn't be surprised to see 12000+ if nice weather.

Yeah I'm thinking 12 - 13K, which isn't huge but would be a good start after the last few seasons.

I think the weather will work in our favor though. It's a rare treat to go to the footy in Canberra without wearing 7 layers of clothing.

Lets get one thing straight.

The A=league derby is a great event. They get 1-2 (depending on the season) 40k sellouts. It is their premium Sydney event.

Our premium Sydney events are ANZAC Day (usually 35-40k), Good Friday (40-50k), Easter Monday (debateable, 35-50k), Origin, (70-80k) and Grand Final (80k).

The rest of the time, both sports get 9 to 15k on average, albiet there are 9 Sydney league teams to soccer's 2. They are not setting the world on fire vs Wellington, Adelaide, Perth et al. Both sports have a long way to go, but comparing their premium event to our clb rounds would be like comparing ANZAC Day to one of their standard club games.

Sydney FC average 18000
Wanderers average 14000

For all the talk of their crowds they average less than most Sydney nrl teams. Obviously coming from a short history but the media does tend to exaggerate when it suits their agenda

qft, much better watching footy when its hot then when it is butt freezing.

excessive heat can nearly be as uncomfortable as extreme cold ..
temps in the mid 30's will affect a crowd nearly as much as temps hovering around zero

this game is on at the wrong time
on the wrong day
against the wrong team .... to attract a large crowd ( for Canberra )

So Thursday night games may not prove to be a crowds success?

Is this just news to you after reading the annual report?

Mid 30s isn't that bad. People will be watching the game not playing in it.

It's never stopped people going to the cricket or tennis.

Yeah ill give canberra a pass for the cold but mid 30s is no excuse. Thats nice sport watching weather imo. Yeah a little on the warm side but ive been to plenty of cricket matches in that weather

Who is the right team for the Raiders to play, and can they play them every week?

:sarcasm:
Well it certainly ain't Penrith..
Almost any other Sydney team would be a better draw card on a,Saturday at 3pm.

People expecting a good crowd for this game are showing they have NFI
It will be a great contest deserving of one
But Raiders fans won't come out to watch in.numbers til we live up to the hype & string a few wins together n climb the ladder.

I hope I'm wrong
But I don't think I will be

Penrith
At 3pm on a Saturday with live coverage
With the temps expected to get to 34

10K tops.:?

I'll be at the game and I agree with you, I'd be shocked if they get more than 11k.

the Round 2 game vs the Roosters will be worse with the Canberra day long weekend. all these light weight pubes go down to the bay one last time before hibernating over winter.

I hope I'm wrong but until the raiders have a few top 8 seasons in a row they won't pull a crowd. even the the Brumbies who have been finalists for the past 3 or 4 years(can't remember honestly) had an average of 14,200 in 2013, 12,400 in 2014 and around 13k in 2015. so success doesn't equal crowds here.

I don't expect anymore than 11K but geez it gets annoying reading the excuses. It seems as though if the game isn't played on a Sunday arvo in 24 degrees sunny weather, with the team in very good form than people make up excuses not to go.

Apparently Thursday, Friday, Monday and Saturday are all bad for crowds. Can't be too cold but also don't want temps above 30 degrees! Your team also needs to be winning a few games on the trot because that's the only time you actually want to support them. The team is also playing live on tv so might just save the money and stay home and watch that. Oh and don't forget that only games against certain teams are worth seeing (which basically means you're just relying on away fans in reality).

There are just so many excuses every year. I know there are legitimate ones, namely the price of tickets (though compared to other sports they're not that bad), transport and so on. In reality though I think we just need to develop a better culture of actually going to games.

That's enough of a rant though. Here's to hoping for a big year crowd and ratings wise and another glorious year for the storm!

Canberra is a genuinely cold stadium to watch league out of though. It can be an actual unpleasant experience in winter. So with the raiders sucking for essentially the last 15 years its going to be difficult to pull a crowd in the middle of winter at night

A warm autumn day isnt much of an excuse though.
