But what is the rule thats not being enforced, whats the wording? I haven't heard anyone quote a rule just that people seem annoyed (for reasons i don't understand) that souths have two similar shirts.
As I said I would be more than happy for us to have two different shirts I'm just not convinced that souths are not having a rule enforced on them.
From the 2012 operations manual http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/documents/concussion2012/NRL_Operations_Manual_2012.pdf:
1.15 JERSEYS
1.15.1 Jersey Clashes
a. All Clubs are required to have two playing strips in contrasting colours
to avoid clashes with other teams that may play in similar colours.
b. In all cases the Home Team will be entitled to wear the playing strip
of their choice. The Visiting Team may apply to the NRL Director of
Football (or his nominee) for approval to wear either of their playing
strips, however, where the NRL Director of Football (or his nominee)
considers that the Visiting Team’s strip selection does not sufficiently
contrast with the Home Team’s selection, the NRL Director of Football
(or his nominee) may direct the Visiting Team to wear their alternate
strip.
c. If the NRL Director of Football (or his nominee) is of the opinion that
the colour contrast between the two playing strips of any Club is not
sufficient, the Club concerned will be required to have a third playing
strip in a completely contrasting colour available for use as directed
by the NRL Director of Football (or his nominee). Any Club required to
have a third playing strip will be advised in writing by the NRL Director
of Football (or his nominee).
d. The Form of Notice (attachment E) advising of the Home Teams
selected playing strip, and the Visiting Team’s requested playing
strip, must be completed and faxed or emailed to the NRL Director of
Football (or his nominee) by 5:00pm on the Monday preceding each
match.
e. The NRL Director of Football (or his nominee) will advise Clubs of
approved playing strips as soon as possible after receiving the Form
of Notice.
This manual is now 4 years old so I don't know how up to date it is. Souths look to be taking advantage of point c. However, some of us here don't think that point a. is satisfied to justify c. Thats where the point of subjectivity comes in of course.
So Souths have to use a third strip when they play Canberra away, if they do that season. Which just adds to the increasing number of designs that they wear. If the Knights for example decided to release predominately blue alternate (read: away) jersey with white shorts I'm fairly confident that it wouldn't be approved by the NRL on the grounds of it not providing sufficient contrast. Although with the increasing precedent it wouldn't surprise me if they were allowed in the near future.
EDIT: Having re-read point c. it looks as if the rule is looser than I originally thought. It pretty much contradicts point a.
