I think that it is reference to our current system, where top 4 gets two goes, which was only changed over a little while ago.
This is the same system that's in the AFL and they haven't ever had a winner from outside the top 4 either.
The only difference between the current system and 1995, is that the two groups now swap over for the preliminary final. Under the 1995 system, the winner of Cowboys-Broncos would have played the Storm in the 3rd week.

This system produced a winner from 6th place in its first ever year, and has never done so again since, notwithstanding that the McIntyre system was used from 1999-2011. Mcintyre never produced a winner from the bottom 4 either, but it did produce a winner that won 4 finals, in the 2005 Tigers. The 2002 Roosters did likewise. There may have been others.

In 1993 they still had the top 5, and the difference between 1st and 5th was one win only. 4th and 5th had equal chance for all intents and purposes.

AFL is a game where the top teams are a mile above the middle teams, therefore you see teams dominate for long periods, this year is the best chance of seeing a team outside the four win as well, Adelaide and Western Bulldogs are excellent chances.

For me Lowe is a huge loss, while Linnett and Winterstein are missing from this match if the Cowboys win tonight i would find it hard to tip them vs Sharks.

No matter who wins, I can't see either team beating the Sharks next week. That said, I am still furious after last week's loss so go Cowboys.

Ponga will no doubt score a try. As has been the case with seemingly all the debutants this year.

Haha that try the Cowboys were awarded in the under 20's (around the 70th min) was a shockingly bad call. Poor Tigers :(

I have not turned on the TV yet. Let's hope the Bronco gobbling Hadley isn't commentating.

That guy is one hell of a serial pest.
