I'm sure the point has been raised before, but certainly the way Origin is marketed as the be all and end all of RL over the last 30+ years has had a massive impact on how the NRL Premiership is perceived. I have students who can tell me everyone who plays for the Maroons and Blues, yet have no idea which club sides these same players are signed to. Same goes for a huge number of adults who are of the belief that anything outside of Origin is a second tier bush league. Partly why I feel Origin would be better suited at the end of the regular season the way most test match sports work. Nonetheless it appears the reality of the 80's SL report that Sydney has too many teams spread too thinly has led to major drop in attendance, that and Leagues Club membership being more important to many over ticketed membership. Nearly 50,000 members of Easts Leagues and only 17,000 members for Easts games.
