2017 Crowd Watch

So you suggest we should just ignore the fact that the NRL makes up crowd figures.
No I think there is no evidence for it and the source is unreliable and is pushing a pro QLD GF agenda. Shock horror.

If News Ltd were actually keen to look at fudged crowds in a sport seriously, they should look at the Qld AFL teams and especially GWS - which are as rubbery as a Dunlop.

Scg trust have no doubt leaked these false accusations to discredit the Nrl. It comes a day after nine and fox said they should be smaller stadiums. This article is scg trusts retaliation.

No proof given, so discard as BS IMO.

Putting aside parochialism, why would 55k at Lang Park be a better look then 80k+ at Olympic Park?

Not to mention the high % of it not involving a QLD every year.

Why not. The media ignores the fact that the AFL just makes up crowd figures for GWS, Lions and Suns. Who can forget the AFLW game in Brendale just north of Brisbane where the AFL claimed 6000 attended a game in a ground that only holds 3000.

where was their proof that they did?

It is like all the leaks coming out of the white house about Trump, no one knows where they come from. Journalist like they say they can't reveal their sources. I suspect News Ltd journos will say the exact same thing here. It depends on what side of the fence you sit on as to whether or not you believe them.

Being from Sydney I cannot comment on what happens in Qld. I think it is pretty obvious Giants crowds down here are exaggerated. This is often hinted at in match reports threat appears in the press. It could be that no one really cares that the AFL does this. This lack of caring may reveal a lack of real interest by people in the game here.

considering they don't have a source it's obviously bullshit for Queenslanders to swallow

didn't one of the Origins up there this year fail to sell out?

The only way it's possibly true is if they announce total seats sold (including ones they've allocated and given away) - and even so, who gives a shit? Every sport does it.

I don't want to have a knee jerk reaction here as I believe there will be a full-house on Sunday but let's say Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane 2 come into the comp in the (hopefully near) future. Do we then need to look at an A-League sytel model where the highest ranked team earns the right to host the GF in an approved stadium in their state:

Queensland Teams: Suncorp
NSW / ACT Teams: ANZ
Victoria: MCG
WA: Perth Stadium
NZ: Eden Park

Or, to the highest bidding city with the minimum requirements stadium wise. Part of the deal of winning would put the responsibility of marketing to locals on the organising committee from that city.

Both scenarios would avoid stories like the ones this week that paint our game as second rate.

If the GF tickets were reasonably priced I'd already be a sell out. These prices are ridiculous, $400 a seat for Category one reserved. That's what my Category 1 reserved season ticket costs.

It's disheartening to read fans of Sydney clubs who bought tickets for the GF & are now trying to offload. As a Souths supporter, hope for a grand final appearance began a few years ago & from memory i thought they were going to make it when it ended up a Manly v Roosters GF. I remember too all the negativity surrounding that game & that it won't sell out, 2 of Sydney's worst supported teams blah blah.

I still went ahead & attended the game & really enjoyed GF atmosphere, had no vested interest in either team but it ended up being a bloody good match. I thought the NRL put on a bloody good day & ended up same scenario for Storm v Bulldogs until I finally got there in 2014 to actually watch my team.

Added, the last few GF's have been rippers. Fans of 'the game' should attend the GF if they can because it is truly a wonderful event regardless.

It makes me wonder about the other code's GF as I'm sure at a guess there will be possibly 30,000 odd neutrals at the game?! I think the big advantage in that venue is the quality & history of the members section of that ground which makes it a must to attend & enjoy the facilities & event. It is something ANZ stadium can't compare with plus the multi use of the ground for ALL codes means its members have diverse loyalties.

I hope when/if the new ANZ stadium is rebuilt, they (& it is something the NRL should look at investing in) incorporate state of the art & quality stadium member facilities that will attract far greater interest than at present & perhaps reserve 20-30,000 seats to this stadium membership. It is time for rugby league to be in a stadium that has such facilities as I'm sure the other code's team at the SCG benefits greatly from that stadium's historical members areas.

Just a thought

I was just about to post this but others already have.
Didn't Rupert come out and actually say the ALF would get far more favourable coverage in the northern states in all forms of media when he signed the new Fox deal with them?
You are right.
If anyone fudges crowds, it's the Lions, Suns and GWS Gnats.
I'm really surprised no league journalist has EVER called them out on it.

...

I mostly agree with the latter - I attend neutral games often, especially big ones. But GFs are quite simply priced out of range for this to be feasible. I don't blame people for selling off tickets.
I've been to 2 Roosters GFs and sat behind the posts both times, and 1 neutral because I'm close to a few Sharks fans and their first premiership was something I always wanted to see.

The price of a barely passable seat is minimum $200 these days. I won't sit behind the posts with an awful view now that I can afford not to. My money is going to travelling for the World cup.

And on a side note, the Grand Final day BBQ as a neutral is simply too good to pass up. 3 games of consecutive footy, 4 if you throw the Super League in, a backyard pissup with good beer and nice steaks.

The sports library alone at the MCG is better than the entire ANZ precinct put together. Brilliant facility. They forget how lucky they are to have that ground down south. Combine with how central and well linked to transport it is and it's light years ahead of the crap the NSW government has ever come up with.
