NRL strategic plan was to have 400,000 members next year. What's the number likely to be?
300K in 2016
and looking like at least a 10% increase again in 2017
so around 330,000 would be my guess , maybe a few more then that

without Mondays & Thursdays & this stupid early friday game , i think we could have got a lot closer to the strategic plan number.

If you take into account Perth members: 420,000:p

SPs are fine for setting targets, but are not expected to be a fait accompli.I'd be concerned if numbers remained static or worse still ,dropped.Taking into account some crappy scheduling.

But memberships are so cheap I find it hard to believe they would be better off financially with another 70k members than they would be with the money from fox.

as a code we need to realise our value to broadcasters
we were on track to do just this with the last deal , but got a case of shaky knees

we can have a far better schedule so we attract more members & game day attendees , & the broadcast money we need to
but we continue to sell ourselves short.

I dont disagree but its hard to turn back the clock and give a broadcaster less for more money. Foxtel know they are the only game in town and the NRL have to give them what they want.

ah no we don't

foxtel closes its doors without us , well pretty much anyway
we account for a huge proportion of their subscribers & while potential competitors were around but not ready to bid for our rights in this next deal , by 2022 , foxtel won't be the only game in town.

Fingers crossed although I still think its a very hard sell to try and turn back the clocks and give less for more cash. The early Friday game is pretty much inexcusable on all fronts though. If there was a second NZ side and the two were always going to play at home on Friday then I would give them a pass on it.

Hopefully there will be real alternatives to fox by next deal. I'd drop, them in heartbeat if I could get ad free hd nrl elsewhere.

A ninth game and better schedule for same money would have been a much better outcome for fans than the deal the nrl caved in to.

300k in 2016 was the figure I recall. 325-340k would be achievable this year given good growth year on year so far which is already evident in this year's counter.

I don't think Thursday is *that* bad tbh. And either way I don't see scheduling impacting on memberships as much as it would on crowds.

Sorry, what are Fox doing wrong? Like seriously? I'm confused.

.

well I don't agree about it being that bad ... its a pain for most fans Id of thought
school , uni , work or what ever the following day for the vast majority of people when ch 9 doesn't get the game going til around 8pm , & it doesn't finish til nearly 10pm
thats a ... meh , Ill watch it on TV scenario if ever I saw one , & yes thats game day crowds affected moreso.

Our continued ability as a code to erode an attendance culture , where we seemingly go out of our way to make it hard for people to attend games , wether that be the fans of actual teams , or the casual neutral fan needs addressing. Some factors are out of the games control , Sydney being a turd of a city to get around in is one , but getting more people through the gates should be prority numb 1 , from there we have them taking the next step & buying memberships as they are very good value for money. Thats the link to memberships in the schedule albeit a loose one.

The idea and its a pretty good idea is that come the next TV deal there will be other players in the market from online services which will allow the NRL to have a bidding war and take control of the scheduling again so we don't have to have things like Thursday or early Friday games which is what Fox want for their $. Plus you wouldn't have to subscribe to a general package before you can then subscribe to sport which in turn should reduce the cost to consumers.

Everything I see you listed in that first paragraph is an excuse.

We need to get away from the excuse culture. Fanbase and media of late seem to ensure every scheduling decision is pre-judged and fans are offered a ready made list of stupid, piss weak excuses not to go? There is no such thing as a perfectly scheduled game - it's about getting people to WANT to attend the games that are on.

I'm not doubting that - my question is what is the problem now with the coverage Fox offers? Every game and far more analysis than 9 could ever hope to deliver. We're lucky as NRL fans from a TV viewing perspective.

Please lol

we're the only code that does it
the other codes rarely play during the working week

why is that ?

because its F'ing stupid & asking for your fans to decide to " not " want to attend because its a hassle
we're not after a perfect schedule , just a more common sense one & if you are seriously saying 8pm on a Thursday is no less attractive to the average fan then 3pm on a Sunday

then seek help !!

We're not lucky that's just the minimum customers should expect from any competent pay per view provider.

Cost, service (been waiting 5 weeks for them to sort out a weak signal problem) lack of international coverage and the fact we are giving money to news ltd after the way they continually screw the game,

AFL have a fair few Thursday night games.

A league would have more weekday games.

Cricket has shit loads more, their tests are during the day on a weekday!

So... we are the second least code not the only code.

No they don't, they have 8 out of 23 rounds.
Their usual week schedule is
1 Friday night
3 Saturday afternoons
2 Saturday nights
3 Sunday afternoons/early evenings

Compared to our sht that is very fan friendly.
