Trial games are for many reasons.
Some are for giving young players a go, some are for match fitness for established players, and some are to line Cam and JTs pockets.

I made no suggestion about either City Country or Premiership matches in the country, just that more trial matches should be held out of Sydney and and squad strength isn't really a reason not to, since clubs happily will put out a decent squad in a trial when it suits them.

Anything else you read into it is your imagination.

But you are not going to get full strength teams playing in most trials, so it is a fair point to make

So if the crowd number is not a factor or a concern as the timeslot is there for TV revenue, why not make it $10 a ticket. I understand that the clubs rely on the gate takings, so maybe they need to be compensated by the NRL for having to host games in these ridiculous timeslots.
Hasn't this already been a thing? Like 2-3 years ago the NRL actually compensated MNF hosting clubs?

They are, to the tune of $13milllion a year! There is no reason with the massive revenue increase clubs have received this year they couldn’t be slashing ticket prices fir sht tomes/oppositions. Time for dynamic ticket pricing! Most clubs only generate around $1.5-2mill in gate takings.

Any who thinks taking NRL games to places like Tamworth is a bad thing is totally clueless. Regional Australia is a huge strength for the NRL. Not only because of all the juniors they provide but also the TV ratings. Seriously our TV ratings would be atrocious if not for regional numbers. It's the one area we totally dominate the AFL no questions asked.

More importantly though I question what possible downside there is to taking a game to somewhere like Tamworth.

Is it about profit? Well these areas are paying for games to be taken there, I'm prettt sure the teams playing in these areas are making more money if anything not less.

Is it about the size of the crowd? Tamworth had around what 10K people? How many NRL games every year draw a worse crowd than that or at the least a similar crowd? The stadium looked packed on TV and provided a great atmosphere so who cares anyway?

Is it about the look for the game? Frankly most of these regional stadiums look as good on TV as some of the shithole stadiums some NRL teams play out of.

These games look good on TV, are just as profitable as regular games, they draw good crowds regardless of the teams involved and they provide a HUGE boost to the local areas.

Has anyone else here actually attended a game in a regional centre? Who am I kidding no one here actually attends matches. I went to the Tamworth match and the atmosphere and general feel around the town was fantastic.

If it had been played in Sydney it would have been just another NRL match that did nothing for the local area and probably would attract a similar level crowd.

Then why not just make tickets $5 or even free? It would create a better atmosphere and IMO almost certainly lead to better TV ratings.

Perfectly said. I love how the NRL has really given back to regional centres this year after dropping City-Country by playing more games in regional cities. It's priceless for kids when they get to see the players they see on TV running around on the local ground and the excitement and goodwill it brings to the League community is great. I was on holiday at the time but I was thinking about driving down to Toowoomba for the game there this year. When I was young I lived in the country and never got to see top line sport often so I know exactly what country people experience and go through. All the games in Gladstone, Toowoomba and Tamworth looked fantastic on TV and I hope to see more of it. Bathurst is going to be great tonight.

And slightly chilly.
Current apparent temp (wind chill feeling) is 6.8 C!!

That's nothing for me I love colder weather. I've done a fair bit of work in freezers and cold rooms so I'm just used to it. I can walk around in 6 degrees in shorts and a shirt and feel nothing.

As someone who has lived in both Toowoomba and Tamworth along with other regional centres I can relate with this.

It's a shame that so many in this thread are so out of touch with the fans of our game. Considering how much the big cities constantly let us down crowd and ratings wise it's sad to see so many taking a huge dump on our regional fans.

I’m with you
As an example I’d be happy for sharks to do a joint thing with the cowboys

It's a fun way to build a rivalry between clubs and will only help expand the popularity of teams outside of their traditional bases.

I think the idea you suggested is pretty fantastic and it would be great to see it actually happen.

Sharks tried it in NZ against the Warriors
Um
Our home game
Everybody was going for the warriors

But tweak like I suggest and it’d work I think.
Not necessarily those two teams either.

The NRL don't care about the crowd number though, they only care about the TV revenue which would go down if they changed the slot.
I think they care about both
just one more then the other

the NRL do have negotiating power here
make it very clear to ch 9 , that if they are cooperative on this matter now , they'll be in the box seat for the next media rights deal
be uncooperative , & .... well.. we won't forget that
