crowds are actually up this year at this point of the season on 2017
& that's calculating an average for every game played against every game played last year
no stupid ... events ... entering into the comparison & inflating & distorting the average

2018 after 15 rounds & 116 games
average 15,151
2017 we'd had 111 games played by round 15 for an average of 14,903
by round 16 , we'd had 118 games played for an average of 14,869

so while many of us believe things could still be one heck of a lot better
we haven't gone backwards from last year at all

Last year was the worse since we broke the 15k avg in 2005, we would have had to be going really really sht house to be worse than last year!

Just goes to show money isnt the answer to all lifes problems.

Does it really? Explain how?
Id say the game deserves to be run better
to an extent we are reaping what we sow by bending over to broadcasters
but in general , NRL supporters have become lazier & apathetic in the last 10 years

but until we rest our schedule completely off TV
tell them , heres our draw , this is when games are being played , now broadcast them at these times on these days .... or F off

crowds won't improve.

I was addressing the suggestion we've slipped even further

we haven't

NRL Crowds have actually increased in 2018

The big improvers in 2018 are Kogarah, up a whopping 6,006.7, Penrith which is averaging 3,196.9 better per game than in 2017, Campbelltown which is 1,201.8 better, Leichhardt which is up 1,003.8, while Allianz is 517.4 better off and Shark Park is up 172.6.

Penrith’s crowd average has improved every year since 2014, Kogarah has improved immensely from its 2016 average of 9,949 to 16779.7 in 2018 and Leichhardt Oval is up from its 2014 average of 10,469.4 to 13,127 in 2018 of the consistently big improvers. Campbelltown and Shark Park have also had steady growth.

2018 is currently on track to have better Sydney crowds than was achieved in both 2016 and 2017.

Turning around six years of shrinking crowds and improving by such a significant amount is worthy of applause, especially given the game traditionally always has a drop off in crowds during the Origin period.

It’s no surprise that the detractors took this precise moment to strike out at crowds. The NRL has been smart this year by having the second State of Origin clash on a Sunday, which will lessen the impact on crowds at club level, however, as mentioned previously, a full time move to weekends, preferably Saturday for all three Origin games, the better the club comp and the State of Origin series will be.

For some reason it will not allow me to put in the correct web address. The article is from the Sporting News.

Exactly right, crowds under the current climate will never change or improve. I've been to almost every home game since 2011 and to be honest besides the love for your team and watching them play there's very little value outside that to go and watch an NRL game.

We have halted progress so much and turned the neutral supporter away with poor time schedules, boring pregame and half time entertainment and just a real lack of an atmosphere.

The fact that on average we might be getting a few more supporters at some venues evens out when other venues suffer.

I bet 10 years from now we'll all be here 10 years older and peddling the same old arguments.

The thing is with "poor time schedules" that there's no perfect solution. While most can agree Thu night and Fri early games don't do much for crowds, its just as likely we see shit crowds on Saturday or Sunday - they're just normally masked by a couple of other games having a good run (see: Bulldogs v Titans at Belmore last round).

Fact is that there's no such thing as perfect scheduling and there'll always be bludger games that struggle to attract a crowd.

(not really crowds related but havn't seen it posted anywhere else and this idea has been brought up in this thread before)

saw this on NRL.com, Bennett's idea for a "origin month", similar to what has been suggested here a few times, I think this could work, plenty of content for broadcasters, a good opportunity for growth in new areas, and would lessen the impact of origin on crowds we are currently experiencing.

It would also split the season, allowing the contending clubs to try for a fresh push up the ladder, and the out-of-form teams to maybe turn their season around

Not a fan. Origin might take 3 weeks but its 5 weeks between nrl games if you stop a week before and resume a week after. What do the 300 players not in origin do for thst time.

Stuff the 9s. Have Tests on every weekend. Have 3 women's Origins and women's tests on every weekend as well. Indigenous v Maori, Indigenous v Pacific, City v Country etc. there's a whole bunch of things we could do. Origin either on 3 consecutive Sundays or 3 consecutive Wednesdays. No point going Wed - Sun - Wed when there's no NRL on.

Keep NSW Cup and QLD Cup running so the NRL players keep up match fitness, or take friendly games to country venues.

I'd be happy for a three-weekend Origin series and then do the same for all the events this weekend - 3 game series for Womens Origin, pacific tests and ENG v NZ as well. Even mix up the tests with the Pacific nations & England as Bennett suggested.

But Bennett's plan above doesn't really solve any issues around Games 1 and 3 with the short turnarounds. Players for Game 1 would still miss the round before G1 and have short turnarounds after G3.

Couldn’t really give a toss about 9s leave it in the pre season and have each national side play at least a couple of tests. Also the plan still has a two day turnaround afternoon origin.

Origin 1 on the last Sat in May
Origin 2 on the queens birthday long weekend sunday night
Origin 3 the last Sat in June
all NRL free weekends
comp resumes the Thursday night following for all games

we can't have an entire month of the NRL being suspended so the above is the best solution , clubs will need to ... manage .. their players if they are involved in all 3 games plus the club games around them

Short turnaround are good enough for test matches like the ANZAC/Trans-Tasman one in May, so why not Origin?
