I'm not here to fight, I am here to talk about issues. Like the crowd numbers and how we work as a rugby league brethren to help increase our numbers. As I said, I try and go to every Melbourne Storm game that I can and that is not hard because they are the greatest.

Your not even a)from Melbourne, b) A Storm supporter or c) New to this forum.

Your a low quality troll, so please kindly f**k off and take Walter with you

To be honest I thought all Sydney crowds would get under 10k.
I seriously hope when the new WSS is in full swing the clubs dump ANZ.

That’ll make any investment in ANZ reconfiguration worthwhile... Like it or not there will be plenty of games at ANZ, just need the fixturing, clubs and marketing to work to improve the attraction of going there.

So at this point we might actually be looking at a Souths vs roosters final straight up. That shit should go close to a sellout. The next few weeks are looking awesome crowd wise. Exciting stuff.

Unless the roosters lose and they play at ANZ

Just to get a picture of the current situation, with just the one round left:

This year's aggregate up to and including R24 is 2,749,886.

Last year 2017: 2,865,152
Year before 2016: 2,921,617

We only need 115k to beat last year's aggregate. That should be easy enough.

The 171,731 to beat the 2016 figure needed - could be more difficult. Last night's crowd factored in means we need 159,424 from the last seven games.

Having a shot at likely crowds
Warriors v Canberra 28,000
Storm v Panthers 19,000
Knights v Dragons 24,000
Titans v Cowboys 27,000
Eels v Roosters 11,000
Bulldogs v Sharks 16,000
Broncos v Manly 42,000

That's 167,000 - some 8k more than needed, which is great. Let's hope we see those crowds.

Is the goal of 20k average still a thing? I know it was set to reach that number by 2017 which didn’t happen but if the NRL are serious then I’d like to see what their plan is. If they are not, then why are they running this game?

If only most weeks where these type of figures, which is possible with a 19-20 game season.

It's good that we haven't gone backwards but the last 2 years we're hardly high benchmarks (plus this year had far better luck with regards to weather).

Hopefully with the new WSS we'll see a significant boost next year. I still think a 20K average is possible in the near term. The new stadiums (WSS, NQ, Allianz and a redeveloped ANZ) will go a long way to improving crowds. There are other steps that need to be taken which we discuss here all the time but I think the potential is there.

So crowds are generally flat, while memberships have shot through the roof the past couple of years. I guess from a revenue perspective that's fine for the clubs but I'd be interested to understand why people buy a membership and then don't bother attending many games.

It probably should be but I am not sure what value there is in the NRL announcing a target when they don't bother to come up with and implement a strategy to reach said target.

At this stage they may as well say they are aiming for 65k by 2100, it is about as meaningful as 20k by 2020 if they don't have a strategy.

We will soon have modern, quality stadiums in Townsville, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney x 2, Melbourne.

The next stadium we need is Canberra. A roofed/indoor stadium is a must.

Never been to Mount Smart, looks OK on TV, but I’m sure an upgrade would be appreciated.

We’ll have reasonable regional stadiums in Newcastle/Wollongong.

Then we just need to solve the Sydney suburban issues and make better use of stadiums like Central Coast and NIB.

Whereas the AFL crowd figures continue to go forwards esp in non heartland areas.

Except not really, West Coast and Fremantle have a brand new stadium and still haven't had a single sell out, comparatively Origin in Perth for next year has already sold out.

GWS cracked 25,000 members this year and their crowd average dropped from 13,000 to 11,000. Gold Coast Suns membership has decreased to 11,500 when three years ago they were bordering on 14,000. Their attendance looks to be about 11,000 average.

The Brisbane Lions crowds and member numbers have dwindled significantly over the past decade, currently at 20,000 members from a franchise high of 30,000 in 2004 and average attendance of 16,000.

The only non-heartland team making inroads is the Swans and they've had decades of leg ups from the AFL to establish them. They existed in a single product market for 30+ years with no direct competitor. I have no idea how valid claims that a lot of mid-90s Bears fans became Swans fans, but former ARU boss John O'Neil was in the Herald last week saying he gave up on Union and started following AFL along with a bunch of other Waratahs/Union diehards who gave up over how shit the Wallabies are and started following the fumble game.

Like I said, AFL is making leaps and bounds in crowd numbers and memberships. Thus they are financially flush with millions and millions with interest in heartland team and non-heartland teams flurishing.

The Rugby Union sect have seen the light and denounced their old game and even the Rugby Union schools now play more AFL than Rugby Union.

big hit!

it's not like we'll all be flocking there every thursday night.

olympic stadium & precinct is a dump, but the scheduling is just as shit. when only 3 out of 8 matches each week end in any sort of daylight, and matches on thursday night and friday peak, then expect merkins not to turn up regularly
