2018 Crowd Watch

The reality is this..... footy fans are the only ones going to games. No one casually says to their wife or husband “ hey babe let’s go to the footy tonight “ in the middle of winter. So expecting any kind of significant growth in the currrnt environment is stupid.

It is what it is and many factors impact crowds from scheduling to form to weather just get over this obsession of needing crowd growth year on year, nrl makes money from tv, you can’t grow both at a satisfactory rate.

Furthermore shut up PR you’re annoying as all fk

And for the record I’m realistic about how popular the game is and unlike some expect the sub 15k crowds we have. Until the nrl puts an importance on fans then we aren’t changing anything, and no signs of that happening. Unless it’s in the mystery strat plan they refuse to share with us.

Share you’re idea with them.

And to finally put the matter and PR to bed, yawn.
I'll quote a comment by Dr Michale Grosvenor an urban planning expert at the Uni of Southern Qld"

Sydney has one of the largest metro area catchments in the world, which means sprawl and associated commute time is a big issue, but here development is allowed, it is much denser overall than many other cities."
It is denser than Los Angeles,Phoenix,Washington DC,Miami,Seattle,Chicago and of courser Melbourne. And nearly as dense as San Francisco.Remembering also thatt most of these cities have far better road systems.
Sydney is also different ,because cities in the USA are what is called mono centric(one CBD or downtown).
Sydney by contrast is multi centred outside the Sydney CBD,there is Parramatta,Hurstville,Chatswood>This further adds to congestion.

Now PR, can we get back to talking real football, crowds and put the whining in the outhouse?

Scheduling is one of the major problems, and will continue to be whilst dependent on TV contracts, until clubs are self sustaining without the need of big head office grants.New stadiums such as Parramatta, and better stadiums at the outer clubs will IMO remedy many of the crowd number issues.

Oh good, let the unrealistic expectations begin so that we can all be disappointed next Sunday.

20k is par.
Under will be disappointing.
Over will be a good crowd

Screw that
I am pretty sure zero of my staunch dragons fans mates will go.

Yeah
They get ripped off as it is
4 games in red v club costs them around the same as me for 12 games
Both of us are seated undercover.
Ludicrous really. You’d understand if demand was high to charge that much but clearly it’s not. They get top shelf and an eye fillet at the game??

Would be awesome to be able to come here and find actual crowd figures

If you want facts and figures straight up without any discussion there are better places to look than a forum which discusses crowds. Try, oh I dunno, the NRL website? The match centre on LU home page?

The Souths v West’s game didn’t pull a crowd of around 25k last weekend, because it was a game of rugby league, or that it was the Rabbitohs playing the Tigers. It drew that crowd because of three reasons. Firstly, John Sutton was playing his 300th game; secondly, Robbie Farah was playing his 250th game; and thirdly, Farah was playing the team he had just left. Take those three happenings out of the game,, it would have struggled to top 15,000. For mine that tells as a whole lot about the game and what the games fans (I use that term very loosely) think of the game and their attachment to the team they supposedly support. Seeing Rugby League being played and seeing their team played are not the main reasons people attend football games. If they were then every game would be packed out.

This weekend we have the retro-round. A gimmick that the NRL and the clubs hope will draw more people to the games. Not becaythey want to watch the football, more because they want to look outlandish in 90s gear.

I have no doubt that if the NRL would hope that happenings like occurred in the Tigers and Rabbitohs game would happen more often. If league was the great sport we all want to believe it is, it would not need gimmicks or special occasions to attract crowds.

The reason they got 26k and not 15k was the Tigers had beaten the Saints the week before and gave the Tigers supporters some hope of victory and Souths supporters a promise of a competitive game.

This retro round theme is not an NRL sanctioned round. it’s purely Fox league having some fun. I wish it was sanctioned and endorsed (use brown coloured but synthetic coloured balls, old school jerseys)
