But Nigel wood couldn’t implement it and get it over the line. And it’s hardly half arsed, it will be a major success. He has made a bigger impact at the rlif in a much shorter time than Nigel woods who we barely hear boo from.

It is half arsed...it's two bloody games lol

Have 2 groups of 3,Australia seeded to one group & NZ seeded to the other, winner of each group advances to the final...

One extra game is all it takes to make it a proper comp.....but nah typical Aussie's paying lip service to international RL....doing something but not doing it right..just like the pacific tests...double or triple headers in the middle of nowhere..

Australia v Tonga "barely broken even" according to the Aussie press...and that's with the Aussie's taking a 75% pay cut..

Australia playing 3 tests against GB,England or NZ,with the Aussie's having their full $20k match fee, means the 3 tests will cos the ARLC over a $1m in match fees...that's why they think it's not commercially viable...they've priced themselves out

RLPA are pricing Australia out of international fixtures

The way I see this 3 game series is as follows

Mid Season rep weekend - NZ v Tonga

And then a similar setup as this year Australia v NZ then Australia v Tonga over two weekends

By not playing a 4th team means the NRL avoids match payment fees and maybe ground rentals

Seems to be more about cost management than growing the game

I don’t think the pacific tests being played in Campbelltown whilst WSS is being constructed is a bad idea.
The area has a large Pacific Islander population and the games drew well.
Prior to the past World Cup and all the defections that went with it there wasn’t the same buzz around the islands.

Well we don't need to play 3 tests but anyway, I still don't see why we can play NZ and Tonga but not GB. Remember we said we weren't going to play GB well before this Oceania Cup was announced.

And seriously, the NRL has screwed us if match fees are the problem. It doesn't occur to them that if they want to pay their players well - 6 games at $10k match fees will pay them more than 2 games at $20k match fees? 'These players deserve tens of thousands of dollars for representing their country but we can't afford it so we aren't going to let them.'

It is indeed half-arsed. We play 2 games, the same as we did this year. It's half a Four Nations and half a Pacific Cup taped together. The other 3 Pacific nations miss out on playing Tier 1 opposition (apart from maybe GB in an unrelated tour) and Cook Islands miss out on playing anything at all.

I'm pretty sure if this GB tour goes ahead...the games against Tonga & Samoa...won't be in Tonga & Samoa...they'll be played NZ..

Minimum two guaranteed games for all pacific nations, which has never happened before except in World Cup years. And this will be a regular occurrence every second year.
Yes, There are a number of ways that it could work better but it is finally starting to happen and Beattie can take some credit for that. Hopefully in future years it will continue to grow further, things happen slowly in our sport.
And you bag the mid season pacific tests, which kick started this recent pacific growth but there is no equivalent in the northern hemisphere when it could (and should) very easily be implemented instead of having 28 regular season games plus finals (plus challenge cup games).

Pretty sure Cook Islands don't have any guaranteed games.

The amount of quality tests are actually depleting year on year. Yes we have a few more nations playing some footy (though usually in tier 2 standard) but we are seeing the big test nations play less and less. Australia, NZ and Tonga should at least play each other twice next year like they did in the old Tri-Nations, which were heaps better than the unorganised shit we keep getting served now.

Agree that Australia only playing twice two years in a row is pathetic.

I’m hoping that this Oceania Cup is successful and the nz v Tonga mid season test is huge which will eventually lead into another mid season Rep weekend (replicated in both hemispheres). This would allow for more tests per nation each year. It’s a fair point about the bigger nations playing less but I guess now we have the minor nations playing more, we need everyone to increase their yearly tests going forward.

How many tests a year do you think is reasonable & achievable??.

England have played 5

For a year like this year I think 6 should be the minimum. For example 1x Mid-Year, 1x 3-Test Series, 2x Tests v Tier 2 nations. I'd afford Australia one less as we have Origin mid-year.

England and NZ both played 5 tests but 4 were against each other. NZ didn't even play Tonga which had to be the dumbest decision all year.

RLPA has agreed that Test players should get $50k per game

And BRL must foot wages of teams playing Australua eg NZ and Tonga

Here's a question...is this Oceania cup going to be labeled the NRL Oceania cup or the APRLC Oceania cup ?
There should no "Oceania" … !!!!

"Oceania" is a dull, naff name, and no one in the world knows where Oceania is !

People will probably think it's from George Orwell's 1984 !

Hey, here's a thought: seeing how for years it's been the "Pacific tests", and "Pacific" is a sexy name, and "Pacific" is a sexy (dare I say it) brand, and we have a history of a RL Pacific Cup going back to the mid-1980s, we could call our this comp the Pacific Cup.

But no, Peter Beattie and Nigel Wood and the other marketing geniuses couldn't work that out …

And I agree 100% here with Spud … the Oceania Cup as planned is totally half-arsed – the two-tiered format is beyond ludicrous …

just for one: let's say Oz lose both games against NZ and Tonga (not beyond possibilities), will they be "relegated" ?

As if !!!!

And what is the lower tier of Oceania Cup to be called? Oceania Cup Second Division?

You couldn't make this rubbish up …

Oceania is more descriptive and just because your average league fan is as dense as a house brick doesn’t mean calling it pacific is any better. There’s a hell of a lot of nations that are in the pacific that won’t be included in this comp.

But how is the TV deal set up? What will it look like in the future. THis I would assume, like the NRL, is where the big money is.

Do FIFA still call that neck of the woods Oceania for WC qualifiers?
