Point is which is the general cricket fan more likely to reminisce over...a terrifying Allan Donald/Dale Steyn five-for where he shattered stumps and hit blokes in the face at 145kph, or a hard working Pollock five-for where he nipped blokes out with sustained pressure and gentle away swing at 132kph?
That's what I mean by the age thing. My first world cup memories were 1999. And because I mostly watched ODIs during the 00s, my lasting memories of that Saffer team when they played Aus or NZ were Pollock, Kallis and Gibbs. As Pollock scored runs as well as an all rounder, he is far more memorable to me than Donald. It's the same thing with guys like Bevan, Symonds, etc who contribute on both sides of the ball. It wasn't until later that I started to appreciate out and out bowlers.
I should add I used to be a Blackcaps fan as an 8 year old. My favourite player was Chris Cairns. Fantastic all rounder. At the time, that's what I thought made good cricket players, guys who could dominate on att/def.
