Remember Gus's comments about his agreement with Nathan. Along the lines of 'if Nathan told me he wanted to play under his Dad...make it happen' Gus said he would do what he can to make it happen.

Gus has learnt well from his Uncle Nick.

Does this remind anyone of what happened in the mid 90's. Gould left Penrith. Gould then poached Fittler to Chooks.

It does have some similarities especially since Fittler saw / sees Gus as a father figure.

From personal experience, I disagree. I had a non-compete clause enforced upon me in Feb this year. Luckily we brought the clause down from 12 to 3 months without stepping into court (but still with costly legal advice). Court proceedings would have cost a minimum of 30k.

If Ivan has a non-compete in his contract and the Tigers have legitimate reasons to enforce such a clause (which they would), then I would favour them heavily if it went the legal path.

I guess a lot will depend on how the contract is structured and what Ivan agreed to.

We have Gus to oversee things such as contracts - just have Des focus on getting the team performing. He has a pretty impressive coaching record.

Gus isn’t a well man, I don’t want to risk Hasler being that close to decision making.

Plus it’s not just the contracts, I question wether Hasler is good at identifying talent. He let Damien Cook leave the dogs in favour of Michael Lichaa. Hasler supposedly judges talent all based on stats & little else. Whilst stats are very important, you need to have a feel for things too.

But they still can't make him stay and be their coach if he doesn't want to, right? It would just cost him money.

Fair call. Make it clear in his contract he can f**k right off when it comes to that side of things.

If you take away the success Melb had with an illegal side, Hasler is probably the most successful coach of the past decade.

I'd be taking this approach with ANY coach we sign - but especially someone like Hasler or Bennett.

Yeah dw bout that, Gould has spoken about the folly of letting head coaches run and plan the salary cap, we wont be getting ourselves into a bulldogs like situation.

Correct, they couldn't make his stay but they could potentially prevent him from coaching elsewhere.
But the non-compete would only be against them. They can't stop him coaching against other teams.

I know with mine I wasn't allowed to approach customers or contacts of my ex employer for 6 months after i left.

Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher has responded to reports the club has tabled Cleary a four-year deal, starting next season.

“We haven’t tabled Ivan an offer,” Fletcher said.

“We have spoken to him and told him the coaching position is available. But that is not to say we won’t table something in the coming days.”
