Kicks the first 40/20 of his career the week before the coach is sacked. I wouldn't be surprised if Nathan wasn't one of the players unhappy with Griffin.

I think any half would be a little unhappy with hooks game plan. Imagine telling a creative player like Maloney or Moylan when and how they can kick and limiting their ball playing options with flat structures.

I believe it was his 1st 40/20 since April 2016 in Holden Cup.

Jesus.

He had two attempts on the day, the first one went close. It was so refreshing to see us getting the opposition back three chasing kicks rather than taking bombs 10-30m out from their own line. The only time ive seen that this year is when Wally or Katoa has kicked from hooker.

The Board needs to step in here and say we are going to prepare a short list based on the applications and then conduct interviews.

No handpicking of coaches based on what Gus wants.

We have 3 months to get this right. There is no immediate rush to settle this in the next fortnight.

This is a must. The board seem to be switched on but today have come across as puppets of Gus

A lot of talk about his talent ceiling and where his future is in the NRL. Maybe under a different coach he might become the halfback we want him to be.

He often appears caught in two minds in attack. That might just be him or he is battling with the coach. Not expecting massive changes this year but next year should give us the final answer.

Journalist David Riccio was interviewed on 2UE this morning and he said that the word he has out of Penrith is that the players have been following Hook's "game plan" all year to start games and then when they get behind, they throw it out the window and follow Cam Ciraldo's attacking plan, which has been working. Not sure how good his mail is (maybe Daz can clarify), but if true, we could be in for a big score this week.

Panthers offer long-term deal to Ivan Cleary to leave Wests Tigers

Penrith have offered a four-year deal to Ivan Cleary that could force the Wests Tigers to search for their fifth coach in eight years.

NRL.com can reveal the Panthers have put forward a deal to Ivan to return to the club next season until at least the end of 2022, a move that would likely trigger a multi-year extension for son Nathan at the Panthers.

Wests Tigers chairwoman Marina Go told NRL.com that if Cleary asked the club for a release he would not be granted one.

The Wests Tigers have been growing increasingly confident of luring Nathan to the club under Ivan from 2020, however the balance of power has taken a complete turn with the Panthers on the verge of securing a monumental dual coup in reuniting father and son.

Ivan informed the Tigers board on Monday night he had met with a high-ranking Panthers official two weeks ago, believed to be Panthers chairman Dave O'Neill, about the prospect of taking up a deal with Penrith, where he was sacked at the end of 2015.

It's understood O'Neill has a very close relationship with Ivan from their time together at the Panthers and has been instrumental in orchestrating the move to lure him back.

The news caught the Tigers off-guard and has cast a huge cloud over whether he will see out the final two years of his deal despite Go reiterating the club’s desire for Ivan to remain at the helm until at least 2020.

"It is my view that Ivan will be with the Wests Tigers as head coach for at least another two years as he has a contract with us," Go told NRL.com on Monday night.

The tug-of-war over the Cleary family could result in Ivan asking for a release from the final two years of his deal with the Tigers in the next 48 hours.

Ivan’s potential return would also result in Phil Gould, who told Ivan his services would no longer be required three years ago, taking on lighter duties with the club’s football operations and return to overseeing the club’s program.

It’s believed Gould only took a more hands-on approach in 2018 because of the concerns over the way Griffin was running things.

"The Ivan decision I made was in his best interest and my best interest," Gould said on Tuesday morning.

"I believed I was right at the time and that’s why the decision was made."

You can see it happen in games. Gus basically confirmed it on twitter after the Manly game.

Contracts for employment, such as a coach’s contract, are not specifically enforceable (in other words, you can’t enforce a contract of employment to compel someone to keep working for you). That is because it would be akin to slavery.

I would therefore expect that Ivan’s contract would allow him to leave Tigers on giving notice (whatever that notice might be under the contract). However, even then, he could simply walk away from it.

There could be a restraint clause in the contract that restricts Ivan from working for other clubs for a certain period, but that is also very unlikely to be enforceable because the market for coaches is so small it would likely leave him without work at all.

Players and coaches in the NRL should make sure their contracted money is guaranteed even if they get booted before the contract ends.

Pretty shitty of Cleary to walk away IMO.

From what I've read a restraint of trade is very hard to enforce and isn't held up in court easily.

I’m not particularly keen on Barrett or Cleary.

I’d be happy with Bennett, Macguire, Hasler, Holbrook, Fitler, Seibold, Walters, Demetriou, or Obrien in no particular order.
