I am not fussed on Ivan coming back. He had his chance here it didn't work out. I think the club should go through 12 candidates and pick the best one that will get the best out of the players and hopefully win us a premiership.

Gus doesn’t do “due diligence”

bringing Cleary back would be a huge mistake. Are you lot forgetting all the one pass run one pass run plays. Sacking Griffen was the right thing just bad timing. For my 2 cents worth I am a big fan of Ciraldo he was the one that got the juniors ready for first grade lets give him a decent run this year and next

I’d take Ciraldo over Cleary.

But I maintain this whole Ivan back to Penrith thing is a smoke screen

As long as we don't go near Tooves or hasler.
Can't believe some deadset potatoes here even mentioned their names as potential coaches.
Fittler is no good.
Bennett OMG no.
Barrett noooooooo very one dimensional.
Certainly no ex manly or bulldog filth.

IC could work with a new structure around him. But his tactics got stale last time with us.
This whole situation is bizarre.

We’re in a premiership window, not sure I want someone as young & inexperienced as Ciraldo to guide us through that.

I don’t rate Cleary either fwiw.

This is my theory:

Gould not in good health He will retire say in 2 to 3 years.

Ivan will replace him at this stage.

Ivan will mentor Cameron for him to take on NRL coaching 2022.

Ivan will coach his son until 2022 whilst mentoring Cameron.

I don’t think Cleary Sr. Is coming back.

This isn’t playing out the way you’d expect for a reunion.

This is Gus preparing the fans, media and Nathan for the idea that they tried to lure him, couldn’t and went with option B which is actually option A.

Welcome Tim Sheens....
The same Tim Sheens that has Hull KR teetering on relegation? f**k no.

If we were to sign anyone from the SL it needs to be Justin Holbrook. Maybe get Ben Barba on a combo deal and play him at 14 to replace Peachey on a lifeline deal.

That was tongue in cheek but I certainly see your point.

He’d be a step back for sure.

Not sure where this enthusiasm for Ivan has come from. We played a boring and predictable brand of football under him.

We need someone with a top 4 skill set.

You all go on about talent. Imagine what a Madge or a Des could do with serious talent.

I’d hate either of those two but they have won premierships.

Tbh I don’t even know what I want but it’s not Ivan Cleary

Really not sure why we're hung up on an interview process. Gus got 12 applications overnight including 5 current NRL coaches. Woopdidoo. The 5 are prob BA, Mary, Kearney, Bennett and Flanno. Do we really want any of those?
The other 7 without current NRL jobs would be considered higher risk than these 5 as they'd need to get up to speed with the NRL so shortening our premiership window.
Many corporates head-hunt top talent - IMO Cleary fits the bill in providing the players a more inclusive coach. Cleary gets to benefit from the rebuild he started before he got tired.

Ultimately I don't think we'd end up with either of the currently elite coaches - Bellamy and Robinson - and I'm not yet sold on Seibold (could be beginners luck) so who else do we realistically want?

The Board needs to step in here and say we are going to prepare a short list based on the applications and then conduct interviews.

No handpicking of coaches based on what Gus wants.

We have 3 months to get this right. There is no immediate rush to settle this in the next fortnight.
Agree, except if a preferred candidate has another offer and says "my preferred option is the Panthers but I have another offer I need to reply on". If that person was say, Wayne Bennett, I don't think you wait three months.

Contracts for employment, such as a coach’s contract, are not specifically enforceable (in other words, you can’t enforce a contract of employment to compel someone to keep working for you). That is because it would be akin to slavery.

I would therefore expect that Ivan’s contract would allow him to leave Tigers on giving notice (whatever that notice might be under the contract). However, even then, he could simply walk away from it.

There could be a restraint clause in the contract that restricts Ivan from working for other clubs for a certain period, but that is also very unlikely to be enforceable because the market for coaches is so small it would likely leave him without work at all.
Restrictive covenants are also almost unenforceable without consideration (compensation). You can't ask somebody not to work and not give them any money for it. All employers would be able to keep you locked in their employment if they could and it would cost them no more than the ink on the clause in the contract.

Did anyone see the interview with Justin Pascoe? He is digging his heals in as he too was sacked by Penrith.

If there's going to be significant compensation involved I'd just forget Cleary. He isn't worth that.

There are plenty of other options.
Tigers fan lurking here. He may feel some personal animus but it hardly the only reason why he is digging his heels in. We signed a bunch of players that he handpicked, and we have him signed for a further two years. It is hardly unreasonable to expect that be honoured unless Penrith pay for the privilege. Otherwise what is in it for us? Dont really understand your entitlement on this one.

From personal experience, I disagree. I had a non-compete clause enforced upon me in Feb this year. Luckily we brought the clause down from 12 to 3 months without stepping into court (but still with costly legal advice). Court proceedings would have cost a minimum of 30k.

If Ivan has a non-compete in his contract and the Tigers have legitimate reasons to enforce such a clause (which they would), then I would favour them heavily if it went the legal path.
Did you receive a form of payment for the restrictions? But 3 months is nothing when you are talking about restricting Ivan. Ciraldo manages until the restriction is finished.

If Cleary had f**ked off a year and a half into his stint with us, we would have been livid, yet many on here are happy to see him do it to the Tigers. I would have a lot less respect for Cleary if he does leave.

Time to be brave and bold. Just identify the next best young up & comer in the coaching brigade and give that person a crack. I don’t see any point pursuing highly paid over the hill has beens or going back to Ivan Cleary. Given our young roster and junior ranks a youthful enthusiastic coach full of potential is the right fit whoever it may be.
