2019 Crowd Watch

NQ have played like utter shit for 2 seasons in a row, and for some reason the NRL keep putting the better crowd drawing games up there in shitful timeslots and a heap of home games early in the season when it rains. I’m the first to admit our fans have gotten a little complacent of late but it’s also not entirely their fault.

Have they
Been busted for peptides?
self reported busting the cap?
Had the coach sacked Twice by the NRL?
Been accused of giving a player cancer?
Had no sponsors?
Had star player piss into own mouth and banned for ever?
Had star player glass girlfriend in face then blame flatmate?
Had star player get sacked for cocaine?
...ok that’s a yes but he was sacked by us first.
Had the entire team banned?
Have I missed anything?

If not
Then the cowboys have no excuse.

There's probably 5 in reality; Perth, Brisbane North, Brisbane SW, Gosford, Adelaide. The last two being bigger gambles. Don't agree with relocation unless it works best for both parties, better to start a fresh without the taint of a failed brand imo.

None of those places are likely to have 12k+ fans who don't already support NRL ready to buy in. Especially to a "failed" ex-Sydney club.

You're a perfect example. You'd member up and attend if Perth got a side, right? What if that side was a relocated Sharks?

Even if you did, you're not a direct replacement for the Sharks fan who packed it in. You're already a RL fan, at best the game would get you to split your support between Storm and Perth Sharks.

If we're gonna risk a current fanbase we need at least that many brand new fans to even look like breaking even. It costs more get a new customer than to retain one. I'm all for growth though, if there is 12k new fans to be had lets try add them to the current crop. Replacing an existing fan with a potential one is dumb beyond belief.

EDIT: I was being extremely sarcastic when saying there were plenty of cities and fans strung out for a team.

I tend to agree tbh, but I dont think it is a lack of the Bears, or unmerged sides that is the main issue.

As a Manly fan, the games v Parra each year were always the grudge match, after the Bears.
This has slowly died, as far as I can see, anyway.

I think the general apathy to RL has come from the continual sanitisation of the game. We have pandered to the soccer mums, and lost our soul that made RL great.

We used to go to Brookie just to boo Wally Lewis whenever the Broncs/GC came down. I couldnt name 1 player today that evokes that kind of passion in supporters...

Also characters like Spud Carroll and Paul Harrogon building that super intense personal rivalry just dont happen anymore.
Shit, guys get penalised for tackling too hard these days....

We are slowly losing the hardcore fans, at the expense of not upsetting the average mum and dad who may only attend a couple of games a year.

Think it's combination of both.

Gosford is not a big gamble. If done properly such a franchise can regain lost support and consolidate the code from Northern Sydney to the Central Coast. Also adds another 'local " derby with Newcastle just up the road . All on the train line with a modern stadium in place right next to Central Coast leagues club. License to print money but others can't see this!

Give us a better stadium in Penrith and watch our crowds grow!
If we beat Titans we will sell out the stadium against St George and probably again against Canberra the next week on a Sunday arvo. It just makes sense. 30k stadium in Penrith is a no brainer. Geographically speaking alone it's needed.

That was terrible

But you’re not going to lose fans or sponsors because of a flood.

a lot of people lost their houses and or their possessions. Footy is the last thing on their minds unfortunately. Sponsors, well the town has been in the financial pits since 2009, there isn’t a real lot of coin floating around there . real estate is just starting to pick up a bit off the back of Adani. Sucks but it is what it is, I have come to grips that I’ll probably never live up there again until i retire which is not for another 15-20years.

Oh I get that
Like I mentioned, we’ve had natural distasters too.
100 houses destroyed in one fire.

That doesn’t turn people off the footy team like a picture of the star player pissing into his own mouth does.

Newy has had earthquakes and storms. Still rock up to the footy.

Thats what we are doing in this thread right?

Apparently so.
It seems like Beave missed my sarcasm when I went through the hilarious list of reasons why local people would not support the Sharks.

Newcastle and Canberra doing incredible improvements this year. Think we might see Newy end up with highest crowd average if Brisbane continues to tumble.

I gotcha but what I mean is certain pubs in Sydney wont even show NRL on the MAIN screen unless you actively harass them. Courthouse in Newtown, Surlys in Surry Hills etc etc. You don't have that problem in Cronulla, the AFL is always relegated to a shit screen and even then they will switch that over to NRL if you ask.

I heard somewhere that the AFL pay certain pubs in Sydney to prioritise AFL

This is a very rough guide but it clearly shows a trend.

Approximate population from google

Non Sydney teams

Brisbane - 2.6 mil
Newcastle- 480000
Canberra - 390000
Melbourne- 3.8 mil
Townsville only- 190000
Gold Coast - 5400000
NZ Auckland only- 1.6mil

Sydney based teams

Northern beaches - 266000
Sutherland shire -218000
Wollongong - 217000
St George- 260000
Canterbury - 373000
Parramatta- 260000
Penrith - 200000
Campbelltown-190000
Balmain- 83000

Too hard to work out South Sydney and eastern suburbs as all the maps overlapped.

It was about 350000 all up for both .
Call it 400000 for arguments sake.

200k each? Just be fair

ANZ and SCG was too hard to work out.
Couldn’t be stuffed splitting the teams that share s ground.

So using those avg for round 15 in the graph

Percentage of the population going to games

1) Balmain Leichhardt- 15.8%
2) Campbelltown- 6.5%
3) Penrith- 6.3%
4) Suth shire and Wollongong 5.5%
5) St George 4.4 %
6) northern Beaches 3.7%
7) Auckland 0.86%
8) Townsville 0.68%
9) Newcastle 0.45%
10) Gold Coast 0.18%
11) Brisbane 0.08%
12) Melbourne 0.04%

To make it extra fair
I used entire Sutherland shire , Wollongong, northern beaches population
Yet
Only used Auckland ( New Zealand)
Townsville ( North Queensland)

If only I could work out these figure with memberships too.

My head hurts.
