Pretty dumb NRL scheduling of two Top 4 Sydney teams in 2018 on a Thursday night

It is not even going to rate that well either as it is up against the Ashes which splits the audience in Sydney and Brisbane.

Nrl had a chance to put storm on Thursday night at last minute and turned it down..
Roosters v South's was going to swap ..
How long ago was ot that they had this chance? And why were they given the opportunity to swap (has that happened before?)

It would of been better for both crowds and TV audiences if they had of

The NRL should do what they AFL do and hold back on announcing the final rounds matchups until a few weeks out

We had that but fans whinged. We also had friday simulcast meaning no stupid 6pm KO game but fans whinged about that as well. We get what we deserve!

We needed more double headers! Crowds havent shifted for years so no reason to expect this year would be much different, though the inclusion of Bankwest stadium gave some hope. Sadly the NRL hasnt utilised this amazing asset as well as it should have so havent seen the bump we could have done.
They should build a new rectangular stadium in the Moore Park area and improve transport to the region (maybe a tram from Central and the city)

Parra Vs Manly, for a 6pm game that crowd figure would be excellent but wouldnt surprise me if they get less.
Ticket sales for Parra v Manly look ok (gold and silver single tickets only)
I guess the other downside is that no matter the result on Friday Parra will have a home semi the next week so you can save your money for that one

Annesley's briefing yesterday confirmed that full season scheduling was here to stay at least for the duration of the current broadcasting deal. The 2020 draw is expected in a similar timeframe to last year (late October):

The NRL is just weeks away from finalising the 2020 draw and has ruled out a move away from full season scheduling after a request from Channel Nine to broadcast Sunday’s sold-out Wests Tigers-Cronulla match at Leichhardt Oval.

Nine executives are understood to have phoned senior NRL management on Sunday night wanting to swap the 4pm Penrith-Newcastle game with the earlier Tigers-Sharks clash as Round 24 results have ensured it is a virtual play-off for a place in the finals.

However, Fox Sports was allocated the match almost 12 months ago and is unwilling to surrender it to the free-to-air broadcaster.

NRL head of football Graham Annesley said he hadn’t been involved in the discussions but insisted there would be no change to the draw which was announced on October 25 last year.

Annesley said the NRL was working towards releasing the 2020 draw about the same time this year and would not revert to a previous scheduling agreement which enabled broadcasters to select matches in the final six weeks of the season.

“We have got a current broadcasting agreement that is in place and it dictates what the scheduling priorities are,” Annesley said. “The games have been scheduled for next weekend in compliance with that agreement.

Ch 9 too dumb to work out the last round was a 99% chance of being Gallen and Farrah’s last game....and its getting played at Leichhardt.

f**ken tards
Not everyone is as clever as you carcharias
A few different results in the season and Penrith v Newcastle could have been a finals play off

Obviously
But you don’t need to be a genius to know it was always going to be a virtual sell out.
You could’ve put money on it being Benjis last game too.

Just a thought here, but it's possible Ch 9 wanted it but the Tigers requested 2pm kickoff so it was earlier in the day and not finishing in twilight.

do clubs have that sort of power?

Ha
Only the broncos get the time slot they want.
In fact I know the sharks asked for a few games on particular days over the years.
Never got any of them.
In fact they copped the worst possible day for a few.
Middle of Easter and Monday nights for local Derby.

The NRL just spread em as wide as the can for TV.

Surely this upcoming round and the last few weeks shows that a flexi shcedule should be adopted for the last 5 weeks of the comp.

I don't mean full flexi, still schedule the games like now but give channel 9 or better yet, the NRL the power to switch games that are played on the same day e.g. wests/sharks swap with panthers/knights.

They could do this on each day of the weekend except for Thursday, i can't see too many administrative issues with a swap in time with a few weeks notice.

Channel 9 could have broadcast the following under that scenario

Raiders/Roosters
Manly/Storm
Eels/Storm
Wests/sharks
Sharks/Raiders

Ch 9’s Sunday arvo game will be a hoot.

Commentary will be all about games they aren’t commentating on.

Quality input, carch

do clubs have that sort of power?
What do you mean power?

I'm referring to the draw process - clubs can make requests as part of that and I'm suggesting the Tigers may have requested the early kickoff. Just speculation. It's also fair enough that Penrith v Newcastle, up until a few weeks ago, was a chance at being a finals-impacting match.

Hindsight aside, the only real troubling scheduling decision was GC-Saints. The rest of the games were fair bets to be impacting finals - just now only one of the four will because of how results fell.
