How they managed to win with some super inconsistent players in Napa and JWH is surprising

Another example of underestimating the quality of our opposition and over estimating the quality of what we have.

They won the competition because they were the best team. Won the minor premiership, best defensive side in the regular season and during the finals series.

Just maybe JWH & Dylan Napa, and the other members of the Roosters forward pack are far superior to our forward pack.

Exactly. We can't be throwing rookies at them and expect to win a comp. They'll eat it up.

I am in the Phil Gould fan club, I think for the most part he has done a great job in turning this club around.

History will show his biggest mistake was appointing Anthony Griffin to take over from Ivan Cleary. We will never know for sure but just maybe a better coach could have taken us further in the last three seasons and who knows just maybe we could have been a contender.

Having watched this finals series it is apparent we are a long way away from being a real contender.

Defensive wins the big games and our defence in 2018 simply isn't anywhere near the level of the Roosters.

I don't think going back to Ivan Cleary is the answer and I don't think Cameron Ciraldo has the experience to take us to the next level so where does that leave us.

We were never going to win a premiership, regardless of who the coach was, without an experienced spine. This year I thought we were finally there and then Wallace is medically retired and Maloney is crocked for a good part of the season. Our fullback misses most of the season and so we have DWZ learning the position and then forcing us to have a rookie winger.

The Roosters won a premiership with an SOO 115 game fullback, an Australian legend in Cronk, a highly experienced premiership winning Hooker in Friend and a 110 game premiership winning five eighth in Keary. We had a rookie hooker, a rookie fullback (DWZ hasn't played their much), a rookie halfback and an SOO five eighth who was crocked. A combination of Bellamy/Bennet and Jack Gibson couldn't coach them to a premiership, especially with a team that was the youngest average age in the premiership.

We are where we are because before Gus got here, our team was full of overpaid dross, our junior supply line was gummed up and what juniors we did have were signed up on astronomical contracts in no way reflective of their worth. You cannot fix that unless you have a big chequebook and are a blue ribbon team (Roosters, Broncos, Canterbury, Storm) that players will move too. The Panthers do not have a big chequebook, lack a history of sustained success and are in a location without any of the attractions of the coast or the city. We may want to sign Tedesco but he would rather play for a team with a big chequebook, a history of success and an inner city lifestyle.

All this talk about bad cap management and why didn't we get better players is assuming that there are players we could have got. Who are these players that we should have signed? Tedesco, Cronk? Graham? They wouldn't look at us for a second because they can go to more prestigious clubs and they did. I love my team, but I know it is a second tier team. That may change if we are able to win more often and repeatedly make the semi finals, but that takes years, not months. When we are at that point, we can start chasing the Cronk's and the Tedesco's but until then we are doing the most logical thing. Develop our juniors and add a few experienced players where we can. If we keep the supply line primed long enough, eventually we will be competitive every year and we are starting to see that take shape right now.

We were stronger going into 2017. Then weaker going into 2018. We look weaker now then 2018 for 2019. So going the wrong way

We're not a second tier team. We're a top tier team who came within a point of a prelim despite getting destroyed by injuries and a coaching regime so unstable it imploded while we were in the top 4.
that makes me very excited for next year.

How many wins in the normal season seprated Panthers from Roosters.
It was stop start season for Cleary,Blake,Mansour,RCG.
And lost Whare,Edwards for finals.

Lets be honest. Most nrl squads if look at player form player cancel each other out. There isnt a HUGE difference in a lot of spots.
A bit of luck, good coaching, less injuries and guys hitting form give most teams a finals chance and Panthers side a premeirship chance.
Eels just finished last. Im confident they can make finals next season and are not a 5yrs rebuild away. It is just not that a complicated a game.
Most games come down to a few lucky bounces and a few dropped balls.

We are not yet. We are on our way. If we keep this level of consistent success through the grades we will become a top tier team. To me, it means the best players want to play for us. At the moment they don't. We can never give them the lifestyle of the coast or the city, but we can offer amazing facilities, competitive wages and sustained success. We just need to keep the success going to become a choice for the best layers.
