Did the board not undermine Gould by taking the decision out of his hands.

Be careful what you wish for if you want Gould gone because there aren’t that many great General Managers out there. He may not be perfect but he is far better than many before and after him.

We are a mid table team. It isn't like we are flying under his leadership

I assume from your tone you think there are many potential General Mangers out there who could do a better job than Phil Gould? Is that your position?

There is plenty. Given we don't interview for positions. Those above would have no idea who was out there

Glad we can disagree on something again mate! Haha

Sacking him when we did, was pure stupidity, damaged our chances & the whole brand/club.
Damaged what chances? We were horribly out of form and had slid down the ladder. Sacking him we ultimately finished where we were when he was sacked. We had dropped to 5th when he was sacked. Hook has never beaten a top 4 team in finals. Our season continued exactly as it would have if we kept Hook... only the players were happy he was gone

Gus managed to get Wayne Bennett to agree to replace him. If the board backed him our brand is stronger than ever.

Broncos didnt want Wayne. So we dont look bad talking to him. Tigers wanted Ivan. He had 2 years to run on his contract. That's what made us look bad.

Hook forced countless players out of the club because they didnt get along. That was more damaging to our roster and our brand. That's also why we need to build around Nathan. He's the only player left we can build around.

If those players left due to hook only. Then why didn't we recruit like for like replacements? They were let go for the cap space so would of gone no matter who was coach.

The whole thing around sacking hook was a circus. The club taking pot shots at him. To flip flopping the story about Cleary. Could of been handled so much better

Hook took shots at our club. Claiming to be responsible for shit that happened before he arrived.

We sign Bennett and everyone is happy. Except Hook.

They don't pay overs on fringe players for starters
You don't know what they pay anybody. They may pay the minimum that the NRL says, then top them up with TPAs, or money from wealthy benefactors. The clubs that seem to always be near the top, Roosters, Souths, Melbourne and Brisbane all have sch TPAs, benefactors, or support group, so a salary cap makes little difference.

We were a month out from season end & still managing to win 50% games despite playing poorly. Every team in the Comp has/had a poor period & We still had plenty of time to re-fire. A month before the poor run we’d comprehensively beaten the team coming 1st, were leading the comp & looked like the team to beat. He deserved more than a 5 week grace period of playing poorly, especially given the injuries he had to deal with as well & the fact we were still in a good position being equal 4th.

He was dumped purely because Gus lost control & his ego took over.

You talking Moylan? Let’s not go over this again but there was a ton to him being released in addition to the falling out with the coach.

No arguement re: Bennett. I wanted Maguire or Hasler but def would of taken Bennett.

Actually Hook was sacked because of his own ego and refusal to work with anyone. Gus didn't make the decision sack him. Our board did.

The final straw was the Broncos game. He showed how little he cared about his job or the team. He refused to work with anyone... that's hrounds for dismissal at any job.

After all, things at Penrith under Griffin weren't as good as their top-four position suggested. Players were disgruntled, staff were unhappy. Reviews were being undertaken.

And when he was spotted inside the dressing room before full-time of the club's humiliating 50-18 loss to the Broncos in round 19, they knew he'd given up.

That was the moment Penrith changed their minds about waiting until the end of the season to pull the trigger. The fact he didn't return with the team the next day in favour of a day at the races with his friends only justified their concerns.

Thats ontop of taking his team to timezone before the game and leaving all the other Panthers staff behind.

He brought his sacking on himself. Gus cops the blame for it yet he wasnt the one who sacked him. Or hired Ivan. He just had to spin all these decisions he didn't make.

Gus destroyed our cap though. Probably the only way to keep players at the club under a coach they obviously hated. But his cap management has done more damage to our premiership window than anything else.

Based on form of previously injured players. I doubt Bennett could win us a comp either.

The only thing i liked about hook was we made the semis yr in yr out but we were never gonna win a comp with him as coach to inconsistent. We were slow starters under hook but had the fitness levels to claw our way back into amea and win.But under cleary so far we are so undisciplined and unfit its not funnyif things dont change in a hurry we won't even make the semis

Gus said we don't pay minimum wage. There is always 5 or so guys on that

A report from back in 2017. We were 2nd in TPA's used came straight from NRL

There are two clubs. A Leagues club, which is a licenced club with entertainment and poker machines and is dedicated firstly to making a profit and secondly to the furthering of Rugby League in its area and which presumably makes money hand over fist, and a football club which is concerned with running several RL teams and overseeing a junior league, and which requires pecuniary assistance from the Leagues club to remain afloat. Am I close?

Pretty close. Two points.

The Junior League is a separate entity again - it has its own administration, Board, constitution etc.

The Football Club and Licensed Club are two separate entities but in 1984 the Boards of the two entities were restructured so that though there remained 2 boards, the personnel that sat was the same. This stopped the fighting between the 2 entities (always over the poor attitude to budgeting by the football club) - only 6 years after that we made our first GF and after 7 years first premiership.

Despite what many say the Licensed club does not make money easily - you need to invest in it to keep it pumping so that it can support the football club. Over the last 7 years almost all the investment has been in the football club and the licensed club is not performing well. Further they have "sold off" for the next 5 years the real money making operation - the gaming machines. Tabcorp now run our gaming operation and I believe we received the full 5 year payment for this, in advance. (Not 100% sure of that last statement.)

Thanks for that. I would have thought that as a member I would have received noticed of the AGM and the Agenda, but I didn't receive anything (nor was I notified last year). Did everyone else get notified?

I think I answered this in the thread about The AGM that was started.

You conveniently forget where we were when he got here. Mediocrity, virtually no finals footbally and a busted salary cap.

We have enjoyed three years of semi final football and success in the lower grades. The completion of the academy.

Remember, this is not his coach. It is Dave's mate. A complete and utter incompetent decision by the Board. The same type of decision that left us mired in mediocrity for 40 years.

Come on Martie, you are rewriting history now. Gus wanted Hook to finish the year. It was Hook's decision to walk early. The circus that came after it was poor on the clubs part and Gus's, but it was not Gus's ego that saw him walk early.

As for the Roosters, it hurts to admit they are a well run team. They seem to be able to bring their juniors through and turn them into first graders. They do a good job of selecting potential first graders from other clubs juniors and bringing them through. We shouldn't dismiss that. The Panthers have had a massive junior academy for years and have failed to develop a notable amount of quality first graders. How many rep quality players come through our club relative to the size of our junior base?

Developing juniors isn't just bringing through 16 year olds, it is also finding teenagers in the system who can go on to better things, like we did with Kikau. Players on the fringe of first grade who need spit and polish to get them there.

It is only recently we have seen players start to hit the ground running on debut and notably and to his credit, Hook seemed good at that. I suspect he was a hard ass who treated them tough and got them mentally prepared. I hope we don't lose that under Dave's mate, but the signs aren't good so far.
