Crown flagged that it would be pulling out of sponsorship nearly 2 years ago, only now have they followed through.Crown has been there major sponsor for a time, so if a casino group has drawn the line at cost then thats a bit odd. And the storm "brand" in melbourne is actually quite strong from what i see and hear (im in melbourne for work most weeks).
It may be just that Crown have taken a different path and withdrawn, seems most likely. And I'd also suggest that they are basically getting the jersey out jn the public view for the "advertise your business here" angle. Promoting the real estate.
I honestly think that there will be a major on the front soon enough. in negotiation etc. couldnt fathom them struggling for interest. But..
Begs the question - and I've never thought too much of it before but what would the cost of a major sponsorship be per season? Top tier teams, average etc?
So many sides change year on year and I wander what the contributing factors are, ie major sponsor withdraws, the club goes to auction for the highest bidder, a bit of both, other...?
Both Melbourne and Souths probably rate their front of jersey property as a 'premium' space and have likely taken their time looking for a certain price point rather than accepting a lowball offer.
I note comparisons between Melbourne and Cronulla going into a season without a jersey sponsor, but it's worth noting Melbourne already have a healthy stable of sponsors across the rest of their kit - Fuso, Suzuki, Hostplus, TigerAir and so on. Cronulla only appear to have apparel partner xBlades.
