No but where did Bryce's money go? Releasing him had to be done all things considered but we didn't bring in anyone fullstop. So where did we spend the $500k
I answered this in my earlier post:
we resigned Waqa, Yeo, Cleary, Edwards, RCG in the past 12 months - do you think they're on the same cash as last year?
Short answer is Bryce's $500k would be spread across the lot of them.

Clearly his $500k went to the player promoted to his top 30 spot. We dont believe in paying minimum wage.

So when we cut Latu and Moylan to fit in Jimmy. We had no money left and a top 30spot to fill.

Carty money goes toward 2 minimum wage players (one replacing Latu, one replacing Carty)... and its great cap management because Carty was poor for Titans.

Just ignore thatwe f**ked up initially in overpaying these guys and had to cut them to be under the cap. And the fact we overpay literally everyone forcing us to cycle through so many players.
I do enjoy watching your ignorance in full flight. You already know that both players were signed on the back of their 2016 performances. If they continue that in 2017, they're not released. But based on performance they were.

Its also likely the club kept Bryce's cash up their sleeve given they had identified 2019 and 2020 were where the cap crunch would hit. Its then available to upgrade Waqa, Yeo, Cleary, Edwards, RCG.

None of those were actually off contract though
No, but it gives the club the option to
  • Bring some of the 2018 cap into 2019 (and the same again for 2020); or
  • Upgrade players 2018 contracts as part of their re-signed deals.
Once the cap is spent on an underperforming Bryce, the options for cap management are gone.

Gould said our cap is going to get tight in 2020 Yet the politician in him it wouldn't surprise me if he said all doom and gloom just to make it easier to move a player or 2 on, or to rein in a greedy player manager looking for more.

Yep, player managers have Twatter to.

Given we still have Tamou, Merrin & Maloney on contract for 2020, as well as our re-signings kicking in, I think the concern is genuine.

The issue is we are paying too much for our bottom 30 players. What if Bryce doesn't go. We don't re-sign those guys?

That was always going to be case but not re-signing Maloney, Merrin and Tamou clears upto $2m

If Bryce stays then you have a few options:
  • Extend Bryce (or another player) but reduce his per annum salary;
  • Move another player;
  • Don't re-sign 1 of the players we have;
  • Back-ended contracts.
Some of these can be done in conjunction with another. But you know your cap is being poorly managed when you are regularly back-ending contracts. Its the hail mary, short term all or nothing tactic.

Another option is incentivising contracts - the risk here is that a successful season will see a few of your players cash in making the following couple of seasons difficult to manage as the incentives typically carry over into the cap the season after they're paid/earned.

Every single person we moved on has had the choice too or like Merrin they could of stayed. Bryce was here until 2022 so if we can't replace him and keep losing guys then had bad off are we if he stays?

If he stayed he takes a roster spot and you look at the other options posted earlier to keep who you can. Being able to move the players we need to when we need to indicates we don't pay them overs as they're able to get better elsewhere.

Not sure why you're so eager to worry about things that haven't happened. Slow off-season?

It is pointless trying to reason or explain to you why certain decisions are taken or why there are significants benefits to paying players 26-30 modest amounts above the required minimum. You just don't get it.

Why don’t the Gus haters (the minority) start their own thread, that way you can all speculate together.

Personally, I’m neither here nor there on old Gus. I do love what he’s done for the club, but sometimes I cringe at shit he says.

I’m really happy with the players he’s managed to extend with us, I’m sad to see Peach and CHN go, but, Kikau, Cleary, Blake, Leota and hopefully Luai

Imagine if Kikau or Blake had of gone to the open market. Sounds like good cap management to me.

Explain it then. No one has despite several people asking. We have a young team locked up long term. Wouldn't the 1st Interest be keeping that top squad together for as long as possible? The more people on min wage the easier that is
