Since moving to Melbourne I haven't renewed my Sharks membership, simply because there is no value in doing so. Here are the 'benefits' of the 'Country & Interstate' Membership for $110:
  • $75 ticket voucher - To get a ticket to a game in Melbourne
  • 10% off merchandise - Ok cool
  • Leagues Club membership - When will I get to go to the Leagues Club? Especially since it's being renovated and will be closed.
  • Priority access to Finals, Origin and Grand Final tickets - standard
  • 10% off school holiday clinics - Not a child, and also wouldn't be able to go.
  • Access to Members only events - Aside from an interstate appearance, I wouldn't be able to get to any of them.
  • Sponsor Discounts - Probably won't use Durakote, or TFH anytime soon.
  • 10% off pre-purchased tickets for Shark's home games - Ok that's fine, I guess.
  • Vote for your Sharks player of the year - Not exactly a big drawcard but ok.
  • Member Exclusive emails - Ok.
  • Exclusive access to Club news - Is this different to the member email?
Essentially I would pay $110 for a ticket to the game in Melbourne, and I get to go to a signing session.

No thanks.

Yeah. And I can't really see any way that they could make it value for money unless you're interested in accumulating junk (stickers, flags, lanyards whatever).

There's an over supply of product in Sydney. Until that is rectified, and clubs realise memberships can also make them money, then things won't change. Scheduling has also stuffed the NRL as for the past 15 years at least (maybe last 20 years?), people got out of the habit of going to the footy on a Sunday arvo.

well I guess they could adjust the price point to make it better value. Maybe make it $60-$75 depending on what actual cost of this package is to the club.

I think clubs really need to think outside of the box when trying to bring in fans from outside of their heartlands. Most interstate packages reek of afterthought rather than identifying a unique experience. Here are a few ideas:
  • Separate merch/membership package for interstate members.
  • Watch parties and partnerships with venues in the major cities.
  • Exclusive digital events and engagement with players.

not bad ideas at all. In the big cities the membership could be to a “MELBOURNE Sharks supporters group” for example. Could be a heap of social things organised including watching games together on a big screen in some pub where nibbles and drinks discounts were available and special area at aami for when the sharks play there for the group.

as I said previously though clubs are lazy and unimaginative.

I think Cronulla have done membership meet ups with the players in some other cities. Maybe just Brisbane? Kind of hard to justify it unless they get a heap of people along. Probably not that viable really outside Brisbane and perhaps Melbourne.

They also have had a different merch pack in the past. But that really that's not much different to sending people the regular merch stuff.

It’s easy to make it value by utilising sponsors and their products but that takes too much imagination for club and nrl marketing people

Scheduling and game day experience is very poor. Friday night games often have just FG. No bands, no junior game nothing... so why bother attending

the clubs already know that membership can make them money. That’s the problem. They treat it as a cash cow

Maybe we should get a job with one of the dunces.
To those great ideas you can add

Separate merch/membership package for season seating members.

Clubs want to make money? What a novel concept

As far as I know a lot of clubs actually do vary the membership inclusions depending on what level of membership you have. Often season seat holders do get more than an interstate or non-ticketed member.

Because your team is playing??

What can’t see on Fox or Channel 9? You can rush home from work. Fight peak hour traffic, Get overpriced cold food in the cold.. or you come home. In the comfort of your home eat dinner with the family and can watch the footy.

So again clubs need to offer more then you can get from at home
