I’m not sure of the current arrangements however it used to be 9 choose the first 2 games so as a guess:

Eels v Broncos
Easts v Souths

Fox then pick 2:

Storm v Raiders
Eagles v Dogs

9 pick 1:

Panthers v Knights

Then Fox get the last 3:

Sharks V Tigers
Dragons V Warriors
Titans V Cowboys
Yep, I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

By neutrals, you mean a viewer who wasn’t even that much into the sport to dedicate their time to a team.

FTA broadcasters paying big money for sport will bank on teams with a locked-in large support base to bump up their ad rate card. Not a fly by night who may have picked up a few ‘neutrals’.
A neutral is a rugby league fan that is a fan of the 14 teams not playing. Neutrals are the largest percentage of viewers and most easily influenced.

Would a neutral prefer to watch arguably the best team in the competition in the Raiders (current NRL favourites) or a boring team like the Bulldogs that have a big fan base?

If channel 9 has taught us anything the majority of neutrals are barracking for the Broncos.

that wasn't what you implied about 'neutrals' in your original post. to paraphrase, canberra would've picked up a few neutrals after their finals run.

i agree that canberra are great to watch right now, and i mentioned in a reply to another post that as a 'rugby league fan,' i would prefer to watch a game such as storm vs raiders at the moment as opposed to most other clubs that aren't my team. and right there is the point - they aren't my team.

neither Canberra Raiders or Melbourne Storm have a large footprint in Sydney or Brisbane. the guaranteed audience that will tune to watch Canberra won't even be counted in Channel 9 figures, because they contribute to regional numbers and southern cross nine.

fans will make the effort to watch their team first and foremost. that's the priority of any sports fan. anything else depends on how big a fan they are of the sport, or what alternative options are available to them, their family/housemates, etc. going out, staying in to watch other things, etc.

grand designs on ABC (and gardening australia to a lessor extent on friday - yes its mindnumbing to me too) f**ks up my thursday and sunday night TV viewing because the missus loves the show. i let her have it, but if souths are playing on either thu or friday night, then its non-negotiable, i'm watching my team and she can piss off and watch her shows on iView.

even though tigers or st george are shit right now, they both have large supporter bases and supporters will make the effort to watch their team first. that's why they continue to get FTA slots.

i'm not saying I agree with it. that's the business of sports and television here and OS. big support bases guarantee more audience numbers.

If channel 9 has taught us anything the majority of neutrals are barracking for the Broncos.

broncos will provide the largest guaranteed audience of any team/game combination.

A guarantee of a decent base number is true but won't necessarily outrate the other. A game you know is going to be good brings a level of anticipation, Knights vs Roosters last year was one of those games.

I'm watching the footy in my household one way or another. If it's the Cowboys or a big game I'll probably get the big screen, if not I'll use the iPad or something, many ways to watch these days.

A large number of 5 day turnarounds have been re-introduced

This will have a big impact on the top 8

Do you ever stop whinging?

At this stage we are talking about 4 raiders home games at Campbelltown. Two of those four opponents are Newcastle and Melbourne who have to travel further This situation will probably change drastically by July 11 when the following home game is scheduled and you will likely play the renaming 5 home games in Canberra.

Not to mention you played round 1 at home in front of crowds, one of 8 teams to be able to do so and then round 2 against the warriors in GC when it was originally a Trans Tasman trip.

Add to that the golden trio twice and you have absolutely been kissed on the dick with the draw.

As usual, you’ve got your head shoved right up your own arse.

What an eloquent reply to the points made.

You guys have been blessed with the draw, just deal with it.

if it's a draw, then good luck to them.

but i'm sure the NRL/broadcasters have strategically selected who plays who, so not much of a draw.

if you want to see a draw, take a look at how soccer or tennis tournaments are done, or a barrier draw for a race. they're draws.

raiders get a nice schedule for the same reason they get shit FTA allocation. they don't have a big support base, they don't have massive rivalries, so the NRL/broadcasters have considered them below other clubs for match-ups

Probably the Warriors repaying Tamworth for allowing them to train when insulation just before the comp restarted.

under the Warriors logo has Tamworth’s postcode
Good on the warriors then, and good on Tamworth for being so hospitable at the start of the year (looking at you Albury)

I reckon neutrals make up at least 80% of a TV audience. Whats interesting about the Broncos on FTA is whilst it gives Nine a Brisbane audience boost, it costs them considerable viewers in Sydney. Broncos games rate 20-30% lower in Sydney than non Broncos games this year.

Good, has been a weird year not being able to see the team play in Melbourne but glad they've found some support on the Sunny Coast. Maybe the Storm can relocate to Townsville for finals and take advantage of that nice new stadium...
