From the Daily Telegraph,

Dillon works to encourage discussion around mental health

A rising NRL player has vowed to smash the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and shine a light on suicide prevention, after the sudden death of his friend last year.

South Sydney Rabbitohs player Kurt Dillon was one of five mates left devastated by a suicide that rocked the eastern suburbs community in 2019, before setting up the mental health organisation Move for Men, who meet every morning for a walk on the beach.

The 26-year-old young prop — who was formerly with the Cronulla Sharks — said he hoped the grassroots movement would “encourage discussions” about any issues that may be “weighing on one’s mind” and show men that “we all walk through the struggles together”.

“I assisted in starting Move For Men following the devastating loss of our mate. Due to my experience through playing and working in male dominated environments, I believe men sweep things under the rug,” he said.

“So I feel starting Move for Men creates a platform to feel part of a community, raise awareness, start conversations about mental health and get men actively trying to improve their state of mind.”

South Sydney stars Damien Cook and Cody Walker have also backed the group’s initiative.

Every morning at 6am, Thomas Grunberger and his friends band together to take a walk on the beach.

It’s a chance for the Eastern Suburbs group to speak informally about anything weighing on their mind with people they trust.

But the seemingly simple ritual has its roots in a tragedy that shook the tight-knight community.

At the end of last year the group lost one of their closest friends to suicide and started the organisation Move For Men.

What was initially a way to cope with the death has now become an initiative that’s saving many lives.

“The loss of a great friend from suicide in 2019 really hit me hard and it took me a long time to come to terms with what had happened. It also took me a long time to realise what a negative frame of mind I was in and why I was feeling like I was,” Mr Grunberger told The Daily Telegraph.

“There were some days at work for instance when I would wonder why my emails and tasks kept building up and I couldn’t get on top of them, I felt useless and wasn’t enjoy the work I was doing. Which got me down even more.

“I don’t run 100km a day but just go for about a small walk in the morning ideally with my dad or mates. It will blow your mind how happy everyone is at 6am in the morning, that energy is contagious and sets you up for a great day and puts you in a really good frame of mind.”

The organisation could be a game-changer for Australian men who are silently suffering with mental illness, with just one in four men admitting they would seek help from a professional despite making up more than three quarters of suicides.

A survey of Australian men during the COVID-19 lockdown in May found that up to 25 per cent are experiencing mental health issues in their lives and 15 per cent suffered a disorder in the past 12 months.

But the Australian Institute of Family Studies report found that 80 per cent of men said they were unlikely to seek help from phone helplines for mental health issues despite the platform becoming a primary mode of treatment during the pandemic where face-to-face help isn’t as readily available.

The reluctance to use tele mental health services comes despite the Federal Government investing funding into the area in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic including a $669m Telehealth package.

AIFS director Anne Hollonds said the cultural view of men and vulnerability needs to change in order for men to reach out for help.

“This is very concerning and suggests that men may face a range of barriers to getting help when they’re experiencing poor mental health. Things like cost, wait times, stigma around mental health and fear that it will be seen as weakness to seek help, or to talk about feelings, may be potential barriers,” she said.

“That’s why we need to encourage the men in our lives to share what they are experiencing and let them know that it’s not a sign of weakness – it’s a sign of strength – to open up about depression, anxiety or loneliness.”

The report also found that a fifth of young men and a quarter of adult men had thought about harming themselves before and 1 in 10 of both young and adult men had made a suicide plan in their life.

‘He’s got that feeling again’ - Sam Burgess considers shock Rugby League comeback: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...m/news-story/720667f3b33d89e29cdae282ffd289a5

Wow... Just imagine if he returned!! That would be absolutely incredible! I'd love that so much! However, not sure how it'd be possible. Firstly, he was medically retired so I'm not sure what the go would be there and secondly, our cap is already very tight so I'm not sure how we'd fit him in. God, I'd love to see it though!

Surely he can’t play until his previous contract is gone. Which is end of 2022.

Abdo announces restructure to ensure NRL's long-term future: https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/09/21/abdo-announces-restructure-to-ensure-nrls-long-term-future/

From Sporting News,

Bunker tried to prevent 'significant' refereeing error in Rabbitohs match

The NRL Bunker tried to prevent a controversial try from being awarded to South Sydney’s Jaxson Paulo against the Bulldogs, according to the NRL’s Head of Football Graham Annesley.

In the 32nd minute of Thursday night's match, Paulo slid over for a try in the right corner of the field. However, a slow-motion replay shows that the Rabbitohs’ winger had placed his foot on the touchline before grounding the ball.

Sensationally, the try was awarded by referee Ashley Klein on the advice of touch judge Phil Henderson. Klein chose not to send the try upstairs for closer inspection by the Bunker.

In his press briefing on Monday, Annesley called the referee and touch judge's decision a “significant error”.

“In a decision that close, the natural reaction from the touch judge should have been to ask for it to be checked,” Annesley said.

“We’ve encouraged referees and touch judges to make their own decisions where they feel confident, but this one was a little bit too close for comfort.”

Annesley was in the bunker during the match and said that video referee Henry Perenara attempted to stop the try from happening by speaking to the referee through his earpiece.

However, audio played during Annesley’s briefing revealed that Perenara was too late, with Klein awarding the try just as the bunker attempted to contact him.

The incident prompted Annesley to remove touch judge Phil Henderson from his duties for the game between the Roosters and Sharks on Saturday.

“I made the decision that it wouldn’t be in his best interest, coming off the back of this, or in the best interest in the game to have the focus on a touch judge [during the game],” Annesley said.

However, Annesley denies that Henderson has been suspended from ongoing NRL duties. The NRL’s Referees Appointments Committee will meet on Monday and will discuss his involvement in round 20’s matches.

“It’s an error, it’s obviously one that is regrettable but that’s the circumstances and that’s a situation where the bunker almost prevented an error from taking place,” Annesley said.

“I know the bunker gets plenty of criticism but it almost saved this situation.”

Annesley said that the NRL is open to revising the laws of the game to iron out miscommunications between the referees and the bunker. However, he conceded that it is unlikely the bunker would ever be given the ability to overturn an on-field decision once a try has already been awarded.

“It’s not something that we would change at this point,” he said.

“To make a change like that would be a massive change to the way the game has been officiated in the past. But I think those sorts of things are things that are definitely on the table and they need to be.

“It’s definitely something that we will be discussing in the off-season.”

With him and Joel Thompson leaving, there's a good chance Manly is gonna have a crack at gettin Bayley Sironen, and we mighr not be able to match

Of the players under contract, their pack rd 1 next year could look like...

8 Taupau
10 Harper
11 Gosiewski
12 C Sironen
13 J Trbojevic

Keppie
Paseka
Boyle
Olakau'atu

There's no desperate need for another forward there. They won't have much cap room themselves so won't be pricing anyone out of negotiations. If Bayly wants to stay at Souths, i don't see Manly being in the mix for him.

Reportedly Siro wants to play with his brother, so I'd assume that's the major factor if he decided to move

If that's the case, he'll go if Manly come in for him and that's ok. Souths would have to pay overs to try and price Manly out of negotiations.

I saw a FB rumour last night that Souths are interested in Jacob Host. Will be a good replacement should Bayly go.

From Sporting News,

Wayne Bennett's Big Call On Redcliffe Dolphins Coaching Rumours

Wayne Bennett has backed the Redcliffe Dolphins' NRL expansion bid, but won't be drawn into commenting on rumours linking him to a job as coach at the NRL's potential 17th team.

Redcliffe is considered one of the front-runners for NRL expansion after putting together a $100 million bid.

The latest development came earlier this week as the club unveiled a new grandstand while chairman Bob Jones said he would strongly consider Bennett to coach the side.

Bennett is contracted to the South Sydney Rabbitohs until the end of next season, but is expected to leave the club with Jason Demetriou to take over.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Bennett said the Redcliffe proposal makes perfect sense.

"Because of the viewing audience and the size of South East Queensland - it's obvious they should put a team there," he said.

"The Broncos are 33 years old now, well established. No one's a threat to them in that regard.

"The Titans are starting to establish themselves on the coast now, so I don't see any issues there.

"You talk about resources and viability, Redcliffe have all that.

"They've got a tremendous club, they've had it for a long time. They've got great facilities and a great junior club.

"They've played the state league and won the competition. It's all there. Not having to prop a club up in two or three years time which can happen.

"They've got junior development, a senior squad, all the facilities and the wealth there as well.

"It's a real plus in our game. That would be logical to have them as number one contender."

But when it come to rumours linking him to a coaching position at the Dolphins, Bennett was quick to hose down any speculation.

"I've never had that conversation with anybody, but how can you coach somebody that doesn't have a team?" he quipped.
