Well done to Souths by sticking to their guns and thank you to Cody for not looking for better money. He should see a premiership in the next couple of years because of it.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have locked in star five-eighth Cody Walker on a two-year contract extension — and now they can set their sights on securing Latrell Mitchell.
Various media organisations reported on Tuesday night that Walker has agreed to $1.3 million contract with the Bunnies, a deal that is expected to be announced officially on Wednesday.
Walker had been seeking a contract worth around $850,000 a season, whereas Souths had remained firm that they wouldn’t budge from around $650,000 for the former Blues star.
Bunnies coach Wayne Bennett said earlier this month that he expected Walker to remain at Redfern.
“Cody isn’t going anywhere — he will stay at Souths,” Bennett said. “We just have to do a deal and the deal is close to being done. We won’t lose a bloke like Cody Walker.”
The Rabbitohs are flush with funds after captain Sam Burgess was medically retired due to a debilitating shoulder injury, and they have set their sights on signing the Titans’ Jai Arrow.
However, the Gold Coast Titans have indicated they won’t release Arrow to play for a rival club in the 2020 season even if he signs a deal elsewhere from 2021 onwards.
That means Souths could still have the money this year to make a bid for Mitchell.
Mitchell rejected an offer from the Sydney Roosters worth around $800,000 a season to test his value on the open market but he might have to accept a similar figure if he is to land at Redfern.
Even then, the Bunnies might have to release a player or two, with winger-cum-fullback Alex Johnston a name that keeps popping up as being surpplus to requirements at Souths.
