The NRL was worried about their bottom line a few months ago, but now they’re fine, let’s f**k over the Warriors for shits and giggles

This sponsor drama with the Warriors is absolutely pathetic.

They came to Australia months ago to stay to keep the competition alive and this is how they get treated.

That's the real question isn't it.

If it's the NRL suddenly pushing it then it's a disgrace, but if it's Telstra suddenly deciding to enforce the terms of their contract then what can you do really.

Vodafone are the longest running major sponsor of a team in the NRL era. Telstra have sponsored the competition since 2001 but only now are kicking up a fuss about Vodafone sponsoring a team who need all the support they can get right now?

Rubbish.

Lol so For 22 years gallop, smith and Greenberg all managed to negotiate with Telstra for the benefit of warriors but abdo and vlandys have failed miserably to do the same in just 6 months. The games in safe hands!

During lockdown, the NRL had to renegotiate the Fox and FTA deals. I wonder if Telstra took advantage of the situation and renegotiated their deal while the game’s chips were down? They all agreed to keep it quiet while Warriors situation was precarious. It is strange to come out with this now after 22 years.

Possibly.

It could also be that Vodafone in Australia has now merged with TPG and Telstra are fearful that they will lose market share to the new entity.

But still where is Pete V? Doesn’t he want a strong rugba leeg?

The Vodafone agreement with the Warriors has always been grandfathered into Telstra's sponsorship of the NRL ever since Telstra came onboard, so it is really surprising this is becoming an issue now, as that agreement has been renewed multiple times since then.

Considering Telstra doesn't even operate as a brand in NZ makes the push even more confusing, especially as the NRL themselves have had no trouble bringing Digicel onboard as a sponsor in other parts of the Pacific (for that same reason that Telstra don't operate in markets like Fiji, Tonga, PNG, etc)

You shouldn’t trust something just because it’s being reported in the media.

Until more information comes out from the horse’s mouth we don’t actually know how or why things went down the way they have.

The quotes from Abdo are infuriating...

He claimed the NRL had been working with the Warriors for years around the conflict of interest that exists in its sponsorship deal.

“It’s unfortunate that the Warriors and Vodafone have not been able to come up with a mutually beneficial solution, despite the NRL working closely on potential options to try and retain Vodafone as a partner for the Warriors.”

Vodafone sponsors the Warriors for brand exposure, if the NRL won't let them get such exposure, why would they continue to put money into the club? I can't imagine any of the options the NRL has put forward being mutually beneficial to either the Warriors or Vodafone as neither would be getting what they want.
