Petterson-Robati signed up
Wellington-born forward Pride Petterson-Robati has earned a two-year NRL deal with the Vodafone Warriors after making an outstanding impression on a preseason train and trial contract.

The 25-year-old Cook Islands international joined the club’s Australia-based players in their pre-Christmas training camp in Kiama before being united with the full squad in Tamworth last month.

In confirming his contract to the end of the 2022 season, head coach Nathan Brown said Petterson-Robati had made huge strides throughout the preseason campaign.

“Pride should have played NRL footy already but he gets his opportunity now to work hard and forge a career with the Vodafone Warriors,” he said.

“He’s a New Zealand boy heading home and he has fitted into the group extremely well. I know when his chance comes he will be ready to take it.”

An Upper Hutt Tigers junior and ex-Upper Hutt College pupil, Petterson-Robati originally moved from Wellington to Australia after being picked up by Melbourne in 2009.

“Pride joined us on a train and trial contract and has impressed all the coaches with his skill, toughness and desire,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“He deserves a shot and I can see him forging a path similar to what Jamayne Taunoa-Brown did last season. We are all excited to see what the future brings for Pride.”

After playing NYC under-20 football with both Melbourne and Newcastle, Petterson-Robati took time out from rugby league when he quit the Knights in 2015.

He moved to Brisbane in 2019 initially lining up with Valleys before playing for the Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup. He also made his Cook Islands debut that season.

Tohu Harris re-signs until the end of 2024:

Harris recommits to Vodafone Warriors until 2024

Reigning player of the year Tohu Harris has given the Vodafone Warriors a huge boost on the eve of the 2021 NRL campaign by recommitting to the club until the end of the 2024 season.

The 29-year-old’s re-signing was announced to his teammates at their captain’s run this morning ahead of tomorrow’s season-opening encounter with Gold Coast at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford (3.00pm kick-off local time; 5.00pm NZT).

Retaining Tohu is hugely important for the team and the club as a whole

Cameron GeorgeVodafone Warriors CEO
“Retaining Tohu is hugely important for the team and for the club as a whole,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“He’s our current player of the year and he’s a vital cog in our squad. This is a great boost for our club having an established squad leader committing to three more years at the Vodafone Warriors.”

Harris has now extended his time with the club to seven seasons after originally being signed on a four-year deal from the Melbourne Storm.

I love what's happening here at the moment

Tohu HarrisVodafone Warriors back rower
“I love what is happening here the moment,” he said.

“The staff and the players are gelling and it’s been a really enjoyable off season. Now I can’t wait for kick off tomorrow.

“We have some exciting kids coming through the system and I see a great future here in the coming years.

“The other leaders and I need to maintain the standards set so we can become a consistent top team in the NRL.”

New head coach Nathan Brown has Harris locked in at #13 following his successful switch from the second row to the middle last year.

Having watched Tohu over the years I couldn’t wait to coach him

Nathan BrownVodafone Warriors head coach
“Having watched Tohu over the years I couldn’t wait to coach him,” said Brown.

“He is an elite player, one of the NRL’s top shelf forwards, with a work ethic and skill set second to none.

“Tohu has also been a great contributor helping the young players and providing invaluable experience to them in the early years of their careers.”

In being crowned the winner of the Simon Mannering Medal last year, Harris was the only player in the squad to appear in all 20 matches.

He featured prominently in a raft of key statistical categories. At the end of the regular season, he ranked fifth among all players for most post-contact metres (1339) and seventh for most metres gained (3465), an exceptional average of 173 metres a game, the fourth best among all forwards. He was also seventh for most tackles (845) – an average of 42 a game – and 10th for most runs (352).

Karl Lawton released. Wonder where he's off to? Timing seems a bit weird but I'm guessing (hoping) the club have got a replacement lined up.

https://www.warriors.kiwi/news/2021/03/13/lawton-granted-early-release/

The Vodafone Warriors today announced hooker Karl Lawton has requested and been granted a release from the final year of his contract to join another NRL club.

The 25-year-old Lawton is side-lined for most of the season after rupturing the Achilles tendon in his left leg during a training session with the club’s Australia-based squad in Kiama in December.

“We’ve reluctantly agreed to Karl’s request given he has an opportunity to join another club for the next two seasons,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“We’re really grateful for what he has done for the club on and off the field over the last three years.

“We wish him all the best in his recovery from this injury and look forward to seeing him resume his career.”

Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan said the club wanted to ensure Lawton had some certainty about his future.

“Given the circumstances surrounding Karl’s injury, as a club we couldn’t stand in his way of securing another contract moving forward,” he said.

After joining the Vodafone Warriors from Gold Coast in 2018, Lawton was limited to 15 NRL games in his first two seasons before appearing in 18 matches last year.

His 33rd and last appearance was against Manly in the final round of the 2020 season.

Reece Walsh signed from Broncos until end of 2024:
Warriors snare hot prospect
Exciting young Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh, widely regarded as one of the hottest young talents in the game, has been snared by the Vodafone Warriors on a three-year contract from next season.

With the Broncos on a development contract this season, Walsh represented both the Queensland State of Origin Under 18s and Australian Schoolboys in 2019.

The Tweed Seagulls star impressed for the Broncos in their NRL trial against Wynnum Manly last month.

He’s yet another product from the famed Keebra Park State High School rugby league nursery which produced his future teammate Ben Murdoch-Masila along with the likes of Benji Marshall and Payne Haas.

This is a fantastic signing for our club and Vodafone Warriors fans have every reason to be excited about the progress we’re making with recruitment in the short, mid and long term

Cameron GeorgeVodafone Warriors CEO
“This is a fantastic signing for our club and Vodafone Warriors fans have every reason to be excited about the progress we’re making with recruitment in the short, mid and long term,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“Reece is a wonderful, polite young man who impressed us immensely when we met him.

“He comes to the Vodafone Warriors at the perfect time following us re-signing Tohu (Harris). We now have an exciting future with experience and exciting young players developed from within and others that have been handpicked to join us. It’s a great statement for our club.”

Of Australian Indigenous and Maori heritage, Walsh has been wowing observers with his skill level.

“Reece is a prodigious talent who has starred in junior footy,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

It’s not often you get an opportunity to secure a player of his ability. He is a natural footballer with speed, balance and vision

Peter O'SullivanVodafone Warriors recruitment manager
“It’s not often you get an opportunity to secure a player of his ability. He is a natural footballer with speed, balance and vision.

“With experience I believe Reece will go on to become a top-line NRL fullback in the coming years. He’ll complement Wayde (Egan), Kodi (Nikorima) and Chanel (Harris-Tavita) perfectly in our spine.

With captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck finishing with the Vodafone Warriors at the end of the season, head coach Nathan Brown said Walsh shaped as a wonderful replacement.

“Reece has all the attributes in his game that the really good players have,” he said.

“His speed and game sense are things that can make a difference in our team. We won’t be putting pressure on Reece by making big statements about his game but we will give him all the guidance to make sure his game is ready for the start of 2022. We want him to work hard and train hard and he will have a great career in front him.”

A left-footed goal kicker, Walsh slotted six from six attempts and scored a try in the Australian Schoolboys’ 36-20 win over the Junior Kiwis in 2019.

Walsh joins Vodafone Warrior

Exciting young Queensland fullback Reece Walsh is joining the Vodafone Warriors immediately.

Last month the club announced the 18-year-old Walsh had been signed on a three-year contract from next season.

An agreement has now been reached for him to leave the Brisbane Broncos early to spend the rest of the season with his new club.

“We’re delighted Reece can join us early,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“That was always our hope and it was what Reece desperately wanted to do as well once he’d signed with us.

“It’s a great outcome because it allows him to spend invaluable time with Roger (Tuivasa-Sheck) in his final season with us.

“Reece is really looking forward to working with Roger and learning all he can from one of the greatest fullbacks the game has ever seen.

“Roger in turn can’t wait to train alongside Reece and mentor him.”

Starting this year on a development contract with Brisbane, Walsh represented both the Queensland State of Origin Under 18s and Australian Schoolboys in 2019.

He’s yet another product from the famed Keebra Park State High School rugby league nursery which produced his future teammate Ben Murdoch-Masila along with the likes of Benji Marshall and Payne Haas.

Of Australian Indigenous and Maori heritage, Walsh has been wowing observers with his skill level.

A left-footed goal kicker, Walsh slotted six from six attempts and scored a try in the Australian Schoolboys’ 36-20 win over the Junior Kiwis in 2019.

In his only Intrust Super Cup appearance so far this season, he scored two tries and kicked six from seven to help Norths Devils to a 40-10 win over the Brisbane Tigers.

Perham granted release request

The Vodafone Warriors have agreed to allow utility back Hayze Perham to leave the club after he requested an immediate release from his contract.

The 21-year-old, who was in the final year of his current deal, will continue his career with another NRL club.

“We weren’t in a position to offer Hayze a deal beyond this year as we have a number of young outside backs in our system so when he asked for a release we couldn’t stand in his way to secure his future,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“We thank him for his efforts with us over the last four seasons and wish him all the best with the next stage of his career.”

Perham joined the Vodafone Warriors in 2018 initially playing for the club’s Canterbury Cup side.

He made his NRL debut in the Vodafone Warriors’ Anzac Day clash against the Melbourne Storm in 2019 and finishes his time at the club with a total of nine NRL appearances.

Perham has been playing for the Vodafone Warriors’ feeder club Redcliffe in the Intrust Super Cup so far this season.

Two more top prospects signed
The Vodafone Warriors have secured two of New Zealand’s hottest young prospects Zyon Maiuu and Jacob Laban on three-year contracts to add more quality to the club’s playing depth for the future.

The 17-year-old Kelston Boys’ High School students are regarded by Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan as New Zealand’s best young second rowers.

“We are very excited to lock up Zyon and Jacob for the next three years,” he said.

In my opinion they're the best two young second rowers in the country

Peter O'SullivanVodafone Warriors recruitment manager
“Both boys complement each other beautifully, Zyon with his competitiveness, skill and toughness and ability to play edge and middle equally as well as the other while Jacob is a gifted, athletic edge back rower with a huge motor.”

Laban, a Randwick Kingfishers junior, moved to Auckland from Wellington this year to complete his year 13 studies and prepare for the next step of his rugby league career with the Vodafone Warriors.

Maiuu was named the MVP after the recent NZRL National 20s competition.

They are thriving and pushing each other in their training, playing and general life skills.

Peter O'SullivanVodafone Warriors recruitment manager
“Both boys live together as we wanted a good family home for Jacob and can’t thank Paula and Toma (Zyon’s mum and dad) enough for taking Jacob in and giving him a great environment to live in,” said O’Sullivan.

“They are thriving and pushing each other in their training, playing and general life skills. It’s also a great story for Kelston Boys’ High School and our working relationship with the school.

“Both boys made a huge impression on the staff when they joined the New Zealand-based top squad in the preseason last year.

“They both looked very much at home and despite their age mixed it with the big boys.

“I can’t wait for them to join the top squad in November and get their NRL dreams into action as I have no doubt the boys will go on and become Warriors in the next few years.”

Maiuu, a Te Atatu Roosters product, played for the Vodafone Warriors in last year’s Covid-shortened S G Ball Cup competition while he has also played for Kelston’s First XV rugby union side. He was named in the New Zealand Under-18 Schools team last year.

Laban, who attended St Bernard’s College before moving to Auckland, was named College Sport Wellington’s rugby league player of the year in 2019. He was selected in the New Zealand Resident 16s squad last year.

Nikorima commits to Vodafone Warriors for 2022

Playmaker Kodi Nikorima has recommitted to the Vodafone Warriors by agreeing to stay with the club for the 2022 NRL season.

The 27-year-old Kiwi international, originally signed from the Brisbane Broncos midway through the 2019 season, had an option in his favour for next year.

“It’s great news for the club that Kodi has executed his option,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

"His decision to stay will give our playmakers some stability as they forge new combinations and will help in our goal to be a consistent, high-performing team in the NRL.”

Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown said Nikorima has more to offer the team.

“Kodi’s a popular and important member of our squad and I’m sure it will give the group a big lift knowing he has been secured for another season.”

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George said Nikorima’s move underlined the club’s progress.

“Kodi’s commitment for 2022 is another great sign for our club,” he said. “This is more good news for our members and fans as we continue to move into a wonderful chapter in Vodafone Warriors history.”

Nikorima needs just three points to reach 200 points for his career when the Vodafone Warriors face North Queensland at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on Sunday.

“I love being at this club and I feel I’ve improved my play in my time here,” says Nikorima. “I look forward to being a senior player and helping our team improve and challenge the top teams. Now my immediate future is settled I look forward to playing my best footy.”

Rocco Berry re-signs to end of 2024:

Berry deal extended until 2024

Exciting outside back Rocco Berry has signed a contract extension with the Vodafone Warriors until the end of the 2024 NRL season.

The 19-year-old Masterton-born Berry’s new deal comes on the back of him making his NRL debut against Melbourne on Anzac Day and backing it up with his first NRL try in yesterday’s 24-20 win over North Queensland in Gosford.

Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown says the son of former All Black Marty Berry is a key player in the club’s future.

“Rocco has done everything right since pre-season and fully deserved his NRL debut against the Storm,” said Brown.

“His form in the trials and for our feeder club Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup has been very impressive.

“He’s still new to the game with just a handful of rugby league appearances so far but he clearly has so much to offer. He’s a terrific trainer and has a great desire to improve. He’s a pleasure to coach and has a big part to play in our club’s future.”

Berry was signed when he was excelling for St Patrick’s Silverstream College in Wellington’s First XV competition in 2018.

“Rocco has been a standout since the first moment I laid eyes on him. I always said it was a matter of when he played NRL, not if,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“He comes from an outstanding family and has been a pleasure to have in our club since his arrival.

“It’s exciting to lock him in long term. He is an integral part of our planning as we build for the future and is equally a key player for our present.”

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George said Berry’s long-term deal is another example of the club’s strategy to cover all recruitment needs.

“We have said all along we are planning for now, short term and our long-term future. Rocco fits all of the above – quality player and person who fits all the criteria we want at our club,” he said.

Berry represented the Vodafone Warriors at the NRL Nines in Perth last year and also played in the club’s first-grade trial against Melbourne in Palmerston North.

He made his New South Wales Cup debut against Newcastle in the only round played in the competition before the Covid-19 pandemic forced it cancellation.

He spent the rest of the 2020 campaign training with the Vodafone Warriors while they were based in Australia.

Berry appeared in the club’s only 2021 NRL trial against Gold Coast in Lismore in February. He has been used in the centres for Redcliffe this season, scoring two tries in the Dolphins’ 30-28 first-round win over the Mackay Cutters.
