Based on the article that's not the "because" reason (the article and concept were actually published prior to the GF). It's because Reynolds and Milford against their old clubs is a drawcard. They do it every year. In fact the premiers playing in the first game isn't really a huge thing in the NRL anyway?
That "clash" will probably amount to SFA. If they want a true opener to promote the code, you simply have the grand finalists playing. Something similar to the start of the soccer season in England were they have a charity match from the previous season's FA Cup Final.

But of course this amounts more to ratings than anything else.

Round 1.

Thursday
Penrith v Parramatta. Considering the controversial way Penrith won the semi against Parra, the local rivalry and two top teams. Should be a good game.

Friday
6pm - New Zealand v Canterbury. Friday night in New Zealand.
8pm - South Sydney v Brisbane.

Saturday
3pm - Canberra v Newcastle
5:30pm - St George/Illawarra v Cronulla
7:30pm - Melbourne v Manly

Sunday
4pm - Gold Coast v Roosters
6pm - Wests Tigers v North Queensland

With the Warriors remaining in Brisbane for the forseeable future, it's difficult to see them playing in NZ so early in the season. I hope they do but I reckon we won't see action at Mt Smart til at least April, May or later.

thats prime time in NZ & perfect

the 6.30 sunday (5.30 kickoff in QLD) is also far more fan friendly then that time slot in Sydney or anywhere else in NSW
I was meaning the majority of their fans in NZ, who haven’t been at a game in 26 months, it’ll be 31 when then 2022 season kicks off

Round 1 generates enough hype just for the footy being back. GF rematch round one is a nice ego boost for the winning teams fans, but wasted as far as ratings or as a spectacle go. Save it for round 4 or 5 when the gloss of a new season fades a bit and also would coincide with the teams having gotten rid of the off season rust.

Just need to schedule the big drawing teams at home first round. Eels, broncos, storm, bulldogs, souths, Penrith, knights should all be at home opening round.

And this is the problem when non-RL people get involved. I doubt the draw is even put together in Australia. Clubs have their say, then tv, the fixtures like ANZAC/Easter/Queens Birthday are added, send the email to somewhere in Kazakhstan and wait for it to return.

f**k I’m happy to construct the draw for a slab of beer and 2 GF tickets
I'm sure you'd do a better job...

The GF replay should be sometime after round 6, when the teams have ironed out the pre-season rust.
And surely it isn’t hard to play every team once before playing whoever a second time.
If they could do it in the 80/90’s, they can do it now

By week 12 I expect that most teams will have played at least 4 opponents twice.

The NRL is scheduling a monster 2022 season-opener, with the Brisbane Broncos and halfback Adam Reynolds to play against his beloved old club in round 1.

The draw is expected to be released by the end of the week and will include the rebuilt Broncos and their experienced new skipper against the Rabbitohs on a Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Premiers Penrith will launch the season on the Thursday night at their home ground against a Sydney rival, possibly former teammate Matt Burton’s Canterbury.

The most bitter rivals in Australian sport, the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, will be granted the honour of opening Sydney’s magnificent new $800 million Allianz stadium in Moore Park next season.

This match has already been pencilled in the NRL draw for round 25 in August, a few weeks after builders are expected to be finished on the 43,000 seat venue which will feature the most state of the art facilities at any sporting venue in the southern hemisphere.

Rugby league has beaten rival football codes for the official opening although there might be a test event the weekend before to ensure the stadium is ready for a blockbuster full house when the Roosters host their arch-rivals.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the NRL has earmarked the game for a Friday night kick-off.

Have the defending premiers ever opened up their campaign against the previous years wooden spooners?
