I feel like I’ve been reading that the AFL has been overpriced for 2 decades, every TV deal people on here keep saying things will be different this time. Do you not think that hating AFL and being an NRL fan might slightly cloud your judgement here?
ssshh, talk like that will get you spammed with pictures of clowns lol. The gap has been closing each deal but I fear it may widen again come 2025 when we are locked in to our $402mill a year for a further 3 years and they are kicking in a new deal at a time the big streaming services could well be going hard for main stream sports.

The value of something is only what someone is willing to pay. You may consider it overpriced but if they keep realising that value then isnt that its actual value? No different for NRL. Both codes have their pros and cons in terms of why media might deem it worth what they offer. Reality is AFL has managed to get more money each deal, we had years of conflict of ownership but since the 2013 deal we have been independent of that. When we go to nine games we should make up more ground.

How does this compare with previous years? I’m only remembering off the top of my head but seems pretty high.

Telling it like it is? What does that mean in this context? Every TV deal posters like you predict the AFL TV deal to suddenly collapse due to being overpriced and it NEVER happens.

The NRL was underpriced previously due to the people running out game having conflicting interests and we have mostly closed the gap. That’s telling it like it is. The constant rambling that the AFL is massively overpriced and due for a correction is a pipe dream, one that idiots like you have been pushing for like 2 decades.

In 2019 the NRL averaged 459 000 viewers per game for the regular season, or 88 000000 viewers total for the regular season. We`ve just done just shy of 15 000 000 for the first three rounds, 22 rounds to go.
Keep it up at that rate and we`d be on course for 125 000 000. Have to temper this figure though by recognising there is a certain amount of viewer attrition as the season progresses and teams drop out of the race and their fans tune out. Not massive amounts though, and hopefully everything augurs well for a bumper season.

hahaha
keep sipping the koolaide drop kick , foxtel is already preparing the drops & oopsies for a rude shock by refusing to up the ante for the extended deal for 2023/24 & only paying them what they were in 2017
Ch 7 is in dire straights financially & Ch 9 has already shown its hand that FTA stations can no longer afford the massive hikes of previous deals , so rationalisation is already occuring ..

but
please continue to live in your cloud cuckoo land with PR 😎

Yeah seems to me that Kayo has just generally boosted viewership for the code. That lives up to what I see each week, even at the hospital you’ll see ambo drivers watching NRL on their phone whilst waiting to offload. I think we’re experiencing a bit of a ratings boom for sports.

You spend way too much time online and seem to think everything is a fanboy code war. I don’t need to try and prove that the AFL is garbage and that the NRL is top dog. I’m happy to see things just how they are without the massive spin.

Feel free to keep fighting the good fight though.

What would be far more interesting would be a few thoughts on why above is the case.
For starters having two teams in Perth and Adelaide that can pull 210 000 and 183 000 respectively for derbies and probably 100 000 + week-in, week-out can`t hurt.

98% of tv advertising is spent in the metro areas. Having teams in every major metro coverage area of australia certainly helps the Value.

in terms of media deal value here are some of the pros and cons of each code

afl pros
metro reach
National footprint
Nine games
more stoppages meaning more adverts
fta games into their own markets
4 fta games

afl cons
lower overall tv audiences
limited reach in sydney and brisbane market
time slots not all conducive to tv viewing

nrl pros
large regional audiences
Lucrative Sydney market domination
bigger tv audiences, especially ptv/streaming
SOO
nrl time slots made for tv

nrl cons
virtually no reach into three metro cities
only 3 fta games
media dictates to the game
8 games

Or the alternative view is that having taken major funding reductions during Covid, like the nrl, they have managed to get a massive 2 year deal that has helped them claw those losses back. if we’d been able to do the same our Australian part of the deal would have gone up from $1.9bill to around $2bill!

given the tv companies pressure on both codes to reduce the deals why would seven and fox agree to that for afl? Either way it’s a bloody good deal that recoups the covid period losses, thats as you say if it does end up being $473mill a year.
