Yes, though there is a production cost for nrl, the revenue isn’t pure profit. Figures are all hidden now so we can’t tell what the bottom line in digital is anymore.

We've now got a Labor Government and they love the ABC. Albo supports the Elmer Fudds of Redfern.

I know it would require the existing deal with Foxtel and Ch9 to allow it, but that can be managed into it through discussion. Monday night or Sunday night would be a good time slot.

If they pay $15m per annum for it then that covers expansion and gets NRL on the national broadcaster.

The likes of Kelly Underwood and Caroline Wilson would f**ken hate that as it would incentivise the ABC to be a bit more objective in their coverage of fumbleball and rugby league. It would also be a huge blow for onionball.

Getting the ninth match on the ABC will expose our sport to a new audience. It'll also be a chance for us to get some money from the tax payer, which would be nice.

Also, the game is highly tainted with poor administration and officiating. The disgraceful and inconsistent refereeing and MRC prevent this game from being truly professional.
The other main reason is that its us the public that pay for it Foxtel is more expensive that it should be and originally we were told there were no ads on paytv. In terms of Ch9 we pay by having to put up with absolutely terrible game day coverage and and excessive amount of advertising.

epl gets $3billion a year from uk part of deal with less than triple the population. Even if you added afl and nrl togher and tripled it it’s still significantly less. Serie A is on par to afl&nrlmdeals combined. compared per head of population as is nfl. Australia is just unusual in having two main sports in a small population But the $800mill a year tv pays for the two sports is close or better than what other countries are getting when comparing population to $ value.

he clearly said thats what they get from the UK broadcasters ( not everyone else ) & the epl is watched by 140 million australian viewers a year is it ?

I wouldn't go that far. Ratings for EPL games were similar to A-League when they were on Fox Sports. Obviously the time difference works against the EPL.

I think the EPL has more casual fans, especially amongst schoolchildren, who have a team they latch onto but rarely see them play on TV. It would explain the large amount of people who wear Man U gear.

I think Foxtel's terrible financial position suggests they're paying way too much for much of the content on their platform. They've overpaid for premium sport and premium drama for the best part of 20 years and haven't been able to recoup the costs because not enough people are willing to subscribe.

When you compare how much it costs to subscribe to Optus Sport ($15 pm, now $25 pm), Paramount + ($9 pm), BeIN Sport ($20 pm) and Stan Sport ($20 pm) to see all of the soccer and onionball content that used to be exclusive to Foxtel it is far more than what Foxtel charged to see a lot more content.

This John Stensholt story is beat up story sold by Dill to try and get contenders pay more. Their is no truth in it altogether.
The more this goes on the happy I will be....- So when they ink a deal probably next year- I will forward to how spin it - getting less than the NRL.

because in the same story it states the Awful are saying foxtel & Ch 7 are still the preferred broadcasters
theres no way those 2 are paying anywhere near 600 mill between them , they've both gone on the record as saying they won't pay much more then they are now

if the 600 mill is a genuine offer ( read its not ) then why aren't the Awful signing the papers now ?

Lets play devils advocate tho for a sec...

Lets say paramounts streaming service & ch 10 are willing to pay 600 mill a year for the lot including digital rights etc
Foxtel have both major codes & some other content on kayo for as little as $15 a month a with a telstra account of some type. But the average cost is $30 a month.

Paramount plus only costs $10 a month . With the Awful that might go up to $25 if you wanted to stream the derps & misses as well , an extra channel.

I'd say there might be 1 million fumblers nationally ( most in Vic , WA & SA ) who are happy to do this.
Thats 15 mill a month or 180 mill a year extra from subscribers. Now they have the FTA rights too & there is money to be earnt here , but Ch 7 & 9 have both stated they make very little profit from their FTA rights for the NRL & Awful. lets say its between 150 & 175 mill PA with advertising & other associated earning streams

CBS/Paramount are already in debt to the tune of 16 billion globally & are looking to trim & streamline their operations around the world , not madly splash cash on a sport that is only popular in half of one tiny country.

Will be a good outcome for nrl in the long run if paramount get afl. Presuming it doesn’t send fox broke losing afl then they’d have to start Treating nrl much better and would be desperate to hold on to the rights, might even speed up the inclusion of game nine and ten!
