but the amount over the 5 years is still only 730 mill

how much it goes up will depend on what the aflol do with several aspects of their format

They've never paid NRL other than for the naming rights sponsorship ( and digital platform when they ran it). Unlike AFL where they paid AFL for the coverage, somehow NRL stuffed it up years ago and allowed Fox to own and on sell the rights to Telstra. Telstra used to deliver the NRLs digital platforms like they do AFL still, but Grant could see the long term value of that and pulled it from them and set up the NRL's own digital dept. to develop it in house. Now Vlandys has started to dismantle it again.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported yesterday that the NRL has blocked Foxtel from sublicensing the rights in the next cycle, under a new deal agreed last week covering 2023 to 2027.

But their is more-Because Vlandy put a stop to mobile rights without the NRL benefiting and about a year latter Telstra sooked and then Telstra gave up all talk of mobile rights directly- which in about 16 mths time will be realized when the AFL will not get direct cash to the AFL anymore ie after the 2017-2022 deal finishes. The almost famous ALF deal was only worth 2.5billion minus 200 million contra ( Seven 60 and Foxtel 140m) So AFL 2.3billion divided by ( SIX) 6 years equals only 383m ( ave) each year. Which is the amount that played out in all AFL concise Financial statements . Example year one and two of their deal ( cash ) was only $381m (2017) and then $391 (2018) NOT $416m p/a. Understand your enemy, Vlad took $300 million cash off the AFL because Telstra WON"T directly bid and PAY $$$$ anymore after 2017-2022 deal or next year, so I think Vlandy ( purposely or not ) upset the cosy apple cart the AFL and Telsra had going on. Vlad seen the AFL ,Telstra playbook and just ripped it up, right in front of them. No more live steaming for you! Now we ( NRL) are on the cusp of having the biggest sports media deal in Australasia.

it seems with both 7 and fox are no longer so keen for the rights and it comes down to price.

Its been 30 years of "we have teams in every state , in every capital " ... garbage that tv execs have fallen for hook line & sinker that has driven their superior rights amounts , that & a RL war in 1995 & 50% ownership of our code in the peace deal taken by the very media rights company that broadcast the sport that have kept them on top , nothing else . Their rights are worth less then ours & this reality is just hitting them now. When you still after 40 years rate like a turd on TV in 60% of the country this is what happens.

They'll still be in front for the next few years , but our 18th team & 9th game ( 2026) .. will end this nonsense once & for all.

the collapse of their ratings in nsw and qld is the biggest problem for them

literally for most of Australia their ratings are on par with a league or super rugby

Out of interest how would you explain it.

I've explained it countless times! Telstra run AFLs digital arm and benefits from the revenue that generates. AFL have been way ahead of NRL in this space and NRL was bringing in around $25mill in revenue last time we could see the figures (before Vlad hid them away). Telstra also get some AFL sponsorship rights. Streaming to mobiles was a value add for customers, not necessarily a driver, hence why they were happy to give it up earlier than they had to. Fox would have been happy to break the contract with Telstra to get more subscribers, and Telstra would be happy to not be paying Fox and see their customers now paying for KAYO which they have a stake in.

They've extended the deal. The deal is worth $473mill total a year. safe to assume its got $'s attached to it, especially as they continue to have the monetary value part which is income from AFL's digital platforms. It literally says in the press releases 'no change in the telstra deal'.
But yeh I'm sure they are paying nothing whilst reaping those benefits lol. This isnt the NRl where Vlad gives money away to the media partners!
